How Can anyone vote Tory next week?

Postby Astolat » Wed Apr 27, 2022 8:05 pm

I honestly thought politics couldn’t sink lower. I thought Johnson ignoring his own laws to party in lockdown because he’s special it couldn’t get worse. I thought my disgust at the venal, lying lawbreakers that call themselves our government was at a peak.

Then today it turns out one of them watched ****** at work, in full view of female colleagues (& tv cameras?!). If it was an episode of the Thick of it, I’d be laughing along but it’s not is it?

I know national government and local councils are hugely different. But I don’t understand how anyone can stand as a Tory, representing such entitlement, corruption and stupidity. Tories are t fit to hold office.

I’m biased as I’m left wing anyway but I can’t imagine voting labour if it was them doing this. I’d be too appalled. Maybe I wouldn’t vote, maybe I’d look at an alternative.

Will Wandsworth really keep on voting Tory next week?
I think for a few years at least you can take labour at face value on keeping to the Tory council tax level (as they did on national spending in 1997 I suppose) so surely it’s worth even a protest vote?

The main reason not to vote Tory is not that some random MP watches ******, but that the Tory party has foisted on us a lying charlatan as Prime Minister and won't remove him.  It's deeply unfair on Wandsworth Council, who IMHO deserve support, but the only way to protest against that is to vote anything but Tory.

I’m not impressed by what is happening at Westminster, but our local Wandsworth councillors have been excellent.

Compare (Conservative run) Wandsworth to (Labour run) Lambeth… let’s look at the council rates and the services being offered.

Let’s vote for local councillors in local elections.

Local elections are about local issues
Surprisingly the Tory and Labour manifestos don't mention LTNs or cycle lanes!

Any predictions for turnout?

I appreciate people who are sticking to ‘local issues’. I get it. I just don’t agree this time.

A) I’m so disgusted & I can’t wait 3 years to show that at the ballot box.

B) it’s got so bad I think anyone not speaking out is culpable. The parliamentary Tory party not voting the criminal liars out, because they’re scared to risk their seat next time, and yes, even the local lot who have not said a peep. If you stand as a Tory you are supporting the Tory party (& taking funds from them). Unless you speak out I consider you don’t think there is a problem with the behaviour. That sort of ethical vacuum has no place even in local politics.

@notary ‘they’re all as bad as each other’ is music to Boris’ ears. No, no they aren’t. I don’t think labour ministers would watch ****** in the House of Commons. It’s not even about thinking they’re better (ideology doesn’t equal moral superiority) it’s that this lot in government have sunk to new and much much deeper lows than anything that’s come before.

And I do believe a labour council would stick to Tory tax plans. They wouldn’t be so daft as to break that pledge as it’d be giving Tories such a big stick to beat the whole Labour Party with. I think it’s a safe protest vote, even if you reverse it in a few years time.

While Boris certainly lies he is not a charlatan which is the more dangerous part of this - the character he plays is one aspect (not the only) of getting away with the lying.

Easily!
It’s a local election and the figures speak for themselves.

Tory Wandsworth is extremely well run and I don’t see any reason to change it.

Perhaps you prefer Lambeth’s money wasting tactics, badly run services , 12 million spent yearly on debt repayments!
Things are falling apart along the common, broken benches, missing fences, paint needed everywhere!
Ridiculous bin collections with several bins…
Oh and Lambeth and Merton charge well over ours like £1660 and £1781

Plenty of reasons!

Ps the common is managed by Lambeth and not doing Wandsworth residents any favours.

Just look at the state of the common compared to Wandsworth common.

Oh and Wandsworth don’t use local parks as cash cows like Labour Lambeth does with it endless events which is a nuisance for local Wandsworth residents.

Yes it is local & totally agree! We’re not voting for Boris et all. The Lambeth council tax is absolutely exorbitant and I totally agree what do we get for it! It’s crazy!! Wandsworth is much more reasonable!

Very good question. The local Tories are telling a lot of lies locally, as well as nationally.

1) Labour or LibDem could NOT raise council tax by more than 3% without a local referendum. This means £20-50 more per year. NOT £hundreds.

2) The Wandsworth Tories don't tell you that neighbouring Tory boroughs RBKC and LBHF have much higher council tax than Wandsworth!

3) Council tax is mainly determined by the Block Grant from central government. NOT by brilliant Tory management. You would see very little change in council tax if Lab or LDs took over, if at all.

So in summary, the Tories are as usual, telling porkies.

Don’t get me started on lying…
You mean how the Labour Mayor Mr Khan LIED he would scrap £15 7 day a week congestion charge he sneaked in under Covid and without consultation !!
It’s was “temporary”, then promised to
Be scrapped in mayoral election when he felt threatened , now he’s apparently got zero plans to stand by his word.

Oh and as for Labour, Croydon has gone bankrupt !! Labour have a wasteful attitude to cash management.

I see a pattern and don’t fancy a hike in council tax to be wasted by incompetent people.

The original poster Astolat sounds like one of those “ I hate Tories “ blanket Twitter posters.
By their own admission a left wing supporter by birth. But no political influence intended ahead of a local election ! Surely there is a better place than nappy valley to vent cynical political broadcasts, and probably against the forum T&Cs. Wouldn’t be surprised if they were a Labour canvasser.

As noted by earlier posters , local elections .. local issues . Wandsworth council being the best run council in the country for 30yrs .

I can’t wait for Lib Dem or Labour to knock on my door so that I can’t ask them a really difficult question.

- what is a woman?

They will be extremely confused and run away.

Most certainly not a born and bred labour supporter. My dad canvassed for the Tories!

Ignore if you don’t want to talk politics. You don’t have to reply you know.
