It’s good to hear the facts about labour’s inability to hoist taxes.

No more thann3% increase allowed seems a fair risk for sending a message to Boris.

But I guess we get the leaders we deserve don’t we.

Two points here :-

- really important : National politics and local politics are very different. Do not vote locally for national issues, as the local parties have practicaly no say in the big picture. Both Labour and Conservatives are as bad as each other on a national level.

-most importantly, what actually is wrong with the way Wandsworth council manages our area ?  I think its amazing we have such low council tax (helpful during the expensive inflationary times), clean streets, no LTN's that plague Lambeth and very little graffiti ... our roads are also so much better than any local borough.

You can always find something to complain about, but look at the big picture and how much your council tax ban is in the neighbouring Labour lambeth and you will be shocked .. . double probably :-

https://beta.lambeth.gov.uk/council-tax/bands-rates

Please think twice about voting for an ideal, the grass is not always greener and to gamble on another administration could cost us all ££.

My question would be :HOW CAN ANYONE NOT VOTE TORY NEXT WEEK?

MrBalham99 wrote: Thu Apr 28, 2022 6:12 pmVery good question. The local Tories are telling a lot of lies locally, as well as nationally.

1) Labour or LibDem could NOT raise council tax by more than 3% without a local referendum. This means £20-50 more per year. NOT £hundreds.

2) The Wandsworth Tories don't tell you that neighbouring Tory boroughs RBKC and LBHF have much higher council tax than Wandsworth!

3) Council tax is mainly determined by the Block Grant from central government. NOT by brilliant Tory management. You would see very little change in council tax if Lab or LDs took over, if at all.

So in summary, the Tories are as usual, telling porkies.

Hammersmith is a labour council - you might want to check your facts.

8.8% (and about the previous year), the Labour Mayor has put up his half of our council tax bill - massive. A 5(?) year term could leave our council tax in a very different place. Can you afford that ?

As Wandsworth BC have pretty much the lowest council tax in the country, of course everyone else will be higher.

Easy - I live in Conservative Controlled Wandsworth Borough - lowest rates consistently since I moved here in the late 70’s and good services Surrounding Labour controlled boroughs have rates twice the cost. Our Conservative councillors are good. They are not M.P.s - you cote them out in a general election - not a local, where I’d be cutting my nose off to spite my face.

Wandsworth Council conservatives have been excellent . We have the second lowest council tax in London but continue to have good service such as weekly bin collections unlike many Labour run councils which are bi monthly .
They listen to residents and took out the LTNs quickly and they support local businesses. Jo Rigby who is running in Balham after she failed Earlsfield bullies businesses-see below - you want that?
By all means vote Boris and his cronies out when the general election comes but unless you want Wandsworth to become a high tax, badly serviced cess pit then Vote Labour .

That’s got nothing to do with political party. Hate to shock you but loads of men watch ******. And they watch it at work so their wives don’t find out. If you really think Labour MP’s are pure as the driven .. well you are in for an awakening ;) at some point.

Chorister,

As usual you miss the point. The leader of the opposition squirms and cannot answer or explain in words what a woman is. Not very empowering for women that we are being eradicated and wiped out in the name of inclusivity!
All at a cost of women’s right.
Lib Dem’s who are supposed to be liberal have made it very difficult for a female party
members who wore t-shirt with the dictionary definition of a woman : a female adult human
So much for being free to have an opinion.

I know people watch ******. Sure some do it at work. But any man who watches ****** in a work meeting when female colleagues can see is a special kind of entitled creep & should be sacked.

There is a point about leadership and the tone that is set from the top. I’m disgusted Boris & co broke their own laws and lied about it. I’m almost more appalled they cared so little for public opinion and ‘the optics’. Three of the parties happened with a month of Cummings embarrassing Rose garden appearance.

Surely after that any leader would set the highest expectations of their team. Zero tolerance for anything that could even look like they broke the rules. Clearly the ‘little people’s’ opinions only count every 4-5 years.

You keep telling yourselves local isn’t national.

On the 6th May Boris either wakes up with a sigh of relief and the knowledge he’s pulled off another great escape. Vindicated.

Or he faces a beating in the local elections that tips Tory MPs over the edge to a vote of no confidence & there’s a chance we can get back to a semblance of decent government.

Would those talking about poor services from Lambeth care to elaborate please?
I have lived in Lambeth for 13 years and have nothing to complain about. Efficient bin collection. Every time I have needed to talk to anyone with queries on topics ranging from school applications to house move and to citizenship ceremony I have been able to. Street cleaning comparable to Wandsworth (ie, both with room to improve!). Impressive support when my kids caught Covid. A range of training opportunities to support people in the job market, particularly young people.
I am genuinely curious as to what people are so unhappy about.

Oh muddyboots ....... lighten up, I gave a fatuous answer to your fatuous question.  The whole trans debate has become absurd, much more about small numbers of activists on either side trying to formulate questions to catch each other out rather than seeking sensible and compassionate compromises between people with competing interests.

I cannot begin to understand how you and others cannot see the link between national and local politics.  We live in one of the most centralised democracies in the world, and almost every experienced commentator is saying that next week's elections will be read as a judgement on Johnson.  And if there is no link, then why have the local Tories abandoned the traditional Conservative blue on the their literature?  Have you never noticed in previous local elections how local parties (not just the Tories) cosy up to the national party when it is popular and distance themselves when it is unpopular?

If you (and others) are willing to vote in a way that will be interpreted, whether you like it or not, as endorsing this government, then fine, we are both lucky enough to live in a country where we have that choice.  But don't then complain if our national politics descends further into the cesspit.  For myself, I will break the habit of a lifetime and not vote for the Wandsworth Conservative, even though I recognise that that is unfair to the local Councillors who do a good job.  I think it is time to send a message that the antics of this government (not just the Downing Street parties) are unacceptable, and that having foisted Johnson on us, the Tories now have a responsibility to remove him.

Council tax is maybe double Wandsworth
Graffiti everywhere in Lambeth - its cleared so quickly in Wandsworth
Are your rubbish collections weekly ? Thats really important to many.
Lots of potholes on the roads

Ands the big one, the LTN's - Lambeth is a nightmare to drive around now, so easy to get a fine. Many of the taxi drivers refuse to of there as well as journeys are so much longer

Who cares about the environment as long as you can drive your 4x4 and have the lowest council tax in the country! Yes, Labour is not perfect and that's why I am voting Green. But I honestly think, to be a Tory candidate, proud to represent Boris's party, you have to have a pretty low moral standard.

Why would anyone want to pay more council tax ? What a silly comment - better the money is in your pocket so you can choose how to spend it surely ?

What are the Green policies ?

I don't think there is any difference between the Labour and Conservative MP's - all have similar traits
