Further Restrictions for Traffic on Wandsworth Bridge / Wandsworth Bridge Road - A Nightmare for Wandsworth Residents?

Hammersmith and Fulham Council is set to trial more traffic restrictions in the Wandsworth Bridge Road area after claiming success for existing measures in South Fulham.

It will be part of a broader programme of Clean Air Neighbourhood schemes launched across the borough which will include tree planting, traffic reduction trials, sustainable drainage schemes, school streets initiatives and improved infrastructure for walking and cycling.

The council says that the restrictions imposed over the last two years user smart technology have made South Fulham roads quieter and safer for pedestrians and cyclists as well as reducing pollution in the area.

There are now 8,000 fewer cars a day in the area representing a 23% reduction in traffic.

The council says it has been approached by residents in the streets to the west of Wandsworth Bridge Road about extending restrictions to their area. Work has already begun on designating the whole of South Fulham a Clean Air Neighbourhood. This will mean new traffic calming and safety measures on Wandsworth Bridge Road and require ANPR cameras to be place in streets to the west of the road to discourage out-of-borough drivers from using them as a shortcut.

A trial is due to start shortly which will run for between six and 18 months as required by law.

H&F residents with vehicles registered in the borough will be able to go through the cameras without penalty. They’ll also be able to give unlimited visitors free access through RingGo.

Speaking at the borough Cabinet meeting which considered the proposals, Wandsworth Bridge Road resident Natalie Lindsay said, “I personally have developed asthma over the last five years, which I've been told is specifically because of air pollution in London. It is great to see that the council is now taking this very seriously through the Clean Air Neighbourhoods programme

“Residents are taking back control of their air,” said Cllr Holder. “Their streets are no longer full of out-of-borough drivers using them as a cut-through rather than to visit south Fulham residents or shop locally.”

“The air on our streets needs to be cleaner. Polluted air makes people ill – especially children. It can be a killer,” said Cllr Sharon Holder, H&F Cabinet Member for Public Realm. “So we’re pioneering a Clean Air Neighbourhood programme to do something about it.”

Teodoro Catino of Il Pagliaccio is one of a number of local business people in the area who disputes the council's claims that the scheme has improved air quality in the area and say the measures have caused extra hardship at a difficult time. He said, "The South Fulham traffic camera scheme has created congestion, pollution and havoc on Wandsworth Bridge Road and on the side streets to the west side. Traffic has been displaced while the industrial-sized Imperial Road lies empty.

"Hammersmith and Fulham council (LBHF) have created a segregated area in south Fulham, where non-residents are not welcome; businesses have lost customers and women are frequently forced to walk home alone after dark. Cabinet has now approved a new scheme in the west and 10 more LTNs across the whole borough. In doing so, it is not conducting a proper, democratic consultation because it knows the plan is unpopular. Instead, it is engaging with a minority pressure groups in favour of the scheme."

Dr Nicola Lang, H&F’s Director of Public Health, said, “Poor air quality is the largest environmental risk to public health in the UK. Long term exposure to man-made air pollution in the UK is estimated to cause 28,000-36,000 deaths every year. That is equivalent to around 87 deaths in our borough.”

“Air pollution can affect both children and adults. It can lead to a variety of health problems, including heart disease, lung cancer, brain damage and – for older people – the risk of developing dementia. This bold new programme is great news for H&F.” Dr. Lang added.

The council says that nearly one in seven early deaths in the borough are attributable to nitrogen oxide air pollution which is the eighth highest level in London according to King’s College London. A further 8.1 per cent of early deaths per year are attributed to small particulate matter.

H&F Council’s 2022 air quality report shows that local levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) exceeded the annual average national limits of 40 µg/m3 and World Health Organisation Air Quality Standards of 10 µg/m3 last year.

Hi all,

Just bumping this post because it (surprisingly) had few reactions compared to a similar post on Wandsworth Council Speed Cameras.

In summary Hammersmith & Fulham's addition of revenue cameras to fine anyone turning off of Wandsworth Bridge and Wandsworth Bridge Road PLUS reduction of northbound traffic to one lane on the bridge (taking away filter lane to Townmead road (to Sainsbury's) ... ie all bridge traffic going north will have to wait behind buses, lorries and cars turning right will lead to...

* ALL traffic forced up W.B. Road - VERY congested already - will become gridlocked and a pollution hotspot

* Bridge itself gridlocked and polluted - this will lead to even bigger jams on the Wandsworth roundabout and one-way system

* Main route North to Fulham, Hammersmith, Kensington, the whole of West London, A4, M4 , M40 etc ,unusable to Wandsworth residents

* Wandsworth residents will have to divert to Putney Bridge (already congested) or Battersea Bridge (ditto)

* Diversions will lead to burning huge amounts of wasted fuel to drive around

* Hours added to journeys - just to get North of the River.

* Forget going to Sainsburys in Fulham - unless you want to add a 3 hour journey just to get there and back!

To add insult to injury Hammersmith & Fulham say it's to "decrease pollution" yet Electric Vehicles are NOT EXEMPT from the £130 fines!...and of course total gridlock will be the biggest polluter SW London will ever see!

You have been warned! 😁

Thanks Annabel

Personally it will be a nightmare - my sister lives in Parsons Green, right in the middle of the "restricted area" - my elderly Mother lives in West Brompton and my Husband regularly has to drive to his elderly parents in North Fulham...both parents need ferrying around and goods delivered due to their age - I would love to do these trips on a bicycle but I don't think any of them would appreciate a trip on my handlebars!

I feel your pain Denwand. An exemption possibly? If you have medical proof or if they have a disabled badge that they use in your car? Not sure how these things work but I am sure that you won't be the only one in a situation like this.

Thankyou for the suggestion Coldatchristmas - I have enquired to H&F council, since my mother doesn't drive she has no blue badge but I can apply for a carers permit but it only covers one car per household so my Husband can only enter driving my car (awkward since I use my car for business) at least they are a little less Scrooge like! :D

I must say H&F are very draconian about this black cabs are permitted but not Ubers or Minicabs so the east of the Wandsworth Bridge Road there have been many cases of Uber drivers refusing to enter (who can blame them) and jettisoning their passengers streets away from front doors - even vulnerable teenage girls at 1am left to walk the dark streets alone!

Does anyone know the reasoning behind getting rid of the turn right filter lane as you cross Wandsworth Bridge north to Townmead Road? I am baffled!

You can register your mum for a residents visitor permit. This gets added to her Ringo account which you can log into on your phone and can get unlimited free access with any car you add through these zones though you have to activate it each day you use it. It also allows you to park at her house at a discounted rate and when you park via this you get the access all day included. Hope that helps!

What I don’t understand is how you are meant to get to Sainsburys if you can’t turn down Townmead or down Imperial Road from New Kings Rd unless a resident or on a visitor permit.

 Revenue from all council penalties and fines except parking should be paid directly to the central government.
https://www.change.org/p/all-council-pe ... government

I am amazed of the lack of response to this post by what I would call all the sheep following the council line.
Dont people realise this is all about getting money from fines for the council coffers not the local people and pollution! If all fine revenue went to central government restrictions would stop overnight as no money to be made by the council with lots of paperwork! Hopefully Sainsbury's  will have something to say to the council when they start losing money from no right turn lane north over wandsworth bridge!
This does not affect me personally as I avoid the area and shops.Although use sainsburys now and then but will use as I do ASDA and branch of sainsbury in kensinton when in the area if this is carried out!

Are you saying that there will be no access north across Wandsworth Bridge or just that the congestion will mean it’s a nightmare?

Either way, sounds like a nightmare I may have to buy a boat to visit my parents who live in Fulham

Does anyone have a link to the proposals?

Headshrinker:  Instead of buying a boat, you could get to your parents in Fulham by bus, train, tube, cycle, or you could possibly even walk.

It's really hard to work out the ramifications but this is my take.

They will enforce no-go areas in all of the residential roads to the East and West of Wandsworth Bridge Road.

They will also enforce no-go areas in the residential roads around Parsons Green.

That means that you can use Wandsworth Bridge Road but when you get to the top (by the scooter shop) you have to turn left or right. You'd then have to stick the main roads and couldn't then thread through the residential roads.

If you want to get to the M4 or Hammersmith you'd then be pushed to this junction which takes you back...south of the river.

I'm not sure I'm right but that's what I think.

Hmmm looking at what I've written I wonder if you could thread up past Parsons Green tube. Might be able to

Oh thanks! I never would have thought of that

I actually try to walk/cycle/use public transport as much as possible but it is a difficult journey on public transport, a very, very long walk and biking means going on some big scary roads, none of which are practical with kids and certainly aren't reasonable options for my elderly parents.

It's interesting that people don't want to cycle because of scary roads, what makes them scary? The amount of traffic?

LTNS do make our journeys by car more difficult, but that is part of the point: That we reconsider how we make journeys. Not only do we have killer air in London which is mainly caused by transport pollution, we have terrible congestion, not to mention the number of accidents to pedestrians, cyclists and car drivers, which are fatal too many times.

Added to this, as we bathed in summer-like temperatures this weekend, we are facing a climate crisis - most of us on this site have children on this site, what does a future for them behold? We need to not rely on fossil fuels, and reducing transport use by private car is one way to do this:

'London's goal to be net zero by 2030 is only possible if transport emissions are reduced. The scale of reductions required – a 27 per cent reduction in vehicle kilometres according to the 'Accelerated Green' scenario – is only possible with some form of road user charging.'

'And thirdly, the transition to cleaner transport will improve the health of Londoners with fewer deaths from toxic air pollution. If we get this right and show other cities how to do this, we can collectively limit the impacts of a warming climate. For Londoners, this will mean less incidents of extreme flooding and extreme heat.'

You can find these links on London dot gov dot uk
I realise that the change for many, especially people such as elderly parents and disabled is going to be difficult and their concerns to be listened to properly, but the bigger goal of helping make tomorrow's world greener has to be tried. LTNs are something to be tweaked, amended and added to with other measures too - I think the focus on this rather than thinking about the inconvenience to small journeys from Wandsworth - Fulham is probably better.
