Looking at churches in the area

Postby _commonsmum_ » Fri Dec 16, 2022 7:47 am

Hi all

We are looking for a more traditional coe or Catholic Church in the area- something with beautiful architecture and traditional music and welcome to families. I’d love to know if anyone can make any recommendations x

Thank you!

Hi commonsmum,

It is a bit further out for you, but we go to a lovely church in Chelsea - St Mary the Bolton's. It's like a village church in the center of London.

A traditional service but open and welcoming.

There is a traditional organist and choral scholars that sing. Maybe try one of the Christmas services and see what you think (if it's not too far)

St Thomas à Becket Catholic Church in Wandsworth is worth a try. It’s very pretty with beautiful stained glass windows. The priest is wonderful and the 10am mass is great with children.

Sacred heart in wimbledon is large, on a hill and has beautiful gardens and stained glass windows.

The community is friendly, the church is full and the band is talented.

Come to St Mary Magdalen’s on Trinity Road, very close to Pizza Express. Very family friendly and traditional. Held a beautiful 9 lessons and carols service yesterday evening and will have a 4pm crib service on Christmas Eve that is usually filled with families. Then there’s Midnight Mass and a Christmas Day service, all full of traditional carols.

It’s also beautifully decorated with Christmas trees from their Christmas tree festival.

It’s sad that people have to ask these days to find a good one.

I went to a Christingle service the other week at one and every hymn we sang was dull and boring new age guff.

What’s happened to the old classics we use to sing?

Hi. St Bedes Church in Thornton road is beautiful. They have Latin Masses and the Children's choir is the only one in the country where the children are singing in Latin. It is beautiful. They also say the NO Mass as well as Spanish. A beautiful Church with a very Holy reverence to Our Lord. The Midnight Mass is absolutely amazing, lots of families with young children.

St Mary’s Church Battersea on Battersea Church Rd. Their family church service, which takes place at 9.30am on the first Sunday of the month, is wonderful. Very welcoming and just a beautiful church.

hi
St.Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Altenburg gardens, doesn't have the stained glass windows and classical architecture, but it is a thriving and welcoming parish of many nationalities , age-groups and backgrounds (many French in our area) also very family-oriented with children and babies of all ages.
On the music side , the carol service recently featured a recently put-together choir of 12 people of all ages (with a couple of individuals who sounded almost professional) absolutely beautiful.
Hope you find somewhere to join in.

St Thomas off Santos Road is great.  Very welcoming congregation and lots of festive carols and services.
