We just received Another survey from Lambeth- please do fill this survey out on their website if you live in Lambeth! It’s something they are trying to not publicise - so the more we share it and fill it in with whatever your views are - the better!

We're consulting on fortnightly non-recyclable waste collections


To encourage more recycling for a net zero future, we’re proposing fortnightly non-recyclable waste collections from kerbside properties, which are those that put wheelie bins out in the street for collection. Weekly recycling and food waste collections would continue, giving an extra incentive to recycle. We’re consulting on the proposal and want to hear your views before we make a final decision.

About the proposal
Non-recyclable waste from kerbside households would be collected every two weeks, instead of every week.
The change would only apply to kerbside households with wheelie bins. People with large communal waste bins would not see any change.
Recycling services would remain unchanged. Mixed recycling from green bins and food waste in brown bins would continue to be collected weekly. Garden waste collections would continue for those who have subscribed.
Why we’re proposing fortnightly non-recyclable waste collections
We’ve set ambitious targets for Lambeth to be net-zero by 2030. To achieve this, we need to work together to reduce waste, increase recycling, and make other big changes, like using cleaner transport.

Moving to fortnightly non-recyclable waste collections would encourage more recycling and reduce the number of miles our bin lorries drive, limiting emissions and congestion.

Some London boroughs have already introduced fortnightly collections and recycling performance has improved.

Well said! It's a crazy, pointless idea. I actually wanted to comment on Lambeth's proposals via their online form because I live on the boundary of the borough. We have two trucks a week for each borough as the boundary line is down the middle of the road. So our side of the road is affected by what happens in Lambeth.

However, the form (be warned everyone) is more a long questionnaire rather than boxes where you can give your actual opinion. Because I don't live in Lambeth, none of the questions can be answered (unless I lie) so I can't give my opinion.

Just at a time when people are complaining about fortnightly collections and higher council tax, Lambeth want to introduce it. Our road has two systems. Our side - ordinary bins, recycle sacks and FREE garden waste collection in with the regular rubbish but bagged separately - all on the same day. So no extra vehicles.

On the Lambeth side the pavements are blocked with huge wheelie bins. My elderly parents live in a London borough that has wheelie fortnightly collections and they aren't allowed more bins (the council has ruled) to take all the rubbish, and can't leave their rubbish out of a bin because of foxes etc, so the house has rubbish kept in sacks inside which does include food and items that can't be recycled at all. The pavements are continually blocked by various colours of bins. The narrower the pavement of course, the worse the obstruction because the council don't do anything about this.

The idea that this is because Lambeth want to be 'green' is utter nonsense. If greening was important to local authorities, then they would follow the research that says that people should be encouraged to have real gardens, grow plants and not have to pay extra for garden waste collection. Irony is that if you drive, you don't pay extra to get rid of green waste cos you can go to the tip. The disabled, elderly and those who can't drive have to pay for the privilege of having even the tiniest of gardens and actually growing things. Except in my borough - yet. I sincerely hope that my council doesn't introduce the dreaded wheelie bin, garden charges and fortnightly collections.

Just like they think traffic evaporates with massively profitable LTN’s that keep getting installed. They are also so wrong. 5p issue is that Lambeth Labour have such a massive majority (why?) , they just do what they want.

simple way around this if a change happens, just put all your rubbish in the recycling bags,

Well, the whole point is to encourage us to recycle more. If we all used our recycling bins and food waste bins appropriately, I do believe that a typical household won't need weekly general waste collection. my family very rarely uses more than half a bin, and, judging from the fact that their black bins don't seem to be put out every week, neither do several of my neighbours.
