Would love some advise. Currently looking to move our year 1 boy into independent school and these two schools are contenders. Any wise words on the big differences between the two ? Also makes me dubious that they have spaces -are they less popular now ? Any help so so welcome thank you

Re places I have heard due to covid all independent schools in the area have a few limited places - combination I people moving out during covid or having to take kids out due to the cost of living crisis!

We had same decision to make albeit for 8 so was Eaton, Thomas versus Northcote. We chose northcote as just preferred the vibe and how happy the boys were. It felt less formal than Eaton manor and to better cater for 11+ or 13+ moves.

We have been delighted with northcote - boys so happy, lots of sports, fun at playtime, teaching geared to boys, fab teachers in year 4.

Northcote boys also do some things with the Broomwood girls - cross country club, end of year residentials etc

Very happy with our choice :)

You are of course looking to go via Broomwood first and everyone like that who I know :)

We had the worst experience at Eaton house the Manor. I definitely do not recommend this school.

Eaton House has been great for us. We only have experience in the boys prep school. Top headmistress and teachers - they really prepare children for the senior school years, and boys are happy. It‘s academically strong but caters for children of different abilities and despite the very formal uniform and feel, we have always found the teachers and other staff approachable and caring.

We are parents at Eaton House - had a girl who has now finished there and a boy currently in the Prep School. We could not speak more highly of the school and teachers. All amazing and the children are well cared for and happy!

Unfortunately, Broomwood and Eaton are much of a muchness now. They are both owned by the same Private Equity firm, so the badge will be different but underneath the bonnet will be the same engine.

I am indifferent on the debate between private vs state, but I am uncomfortable about the Private Equity model in children’s education.

If you ok with your fees paying the interest on their debt then go for it. I prefer my fees being reinvested in the same school.

With interest rates going up, I would assume more and more of your fees will be consumed by their interest payments. Ask the owners what rate they pay on their debt… won’t be surprised if it’s upwards of 9-10% and rising…. paid for with your fees.

Take another look at the private equity model (think Asda or Glazier’s acquisition of Manchester United) and then decide if you share the same values. The acquisition of the school most likely funded through debt. The school buildings will be used as collateral. The interest will be paid for by the fees. Also, the Holding company or significant holding will be domiciled in a tax haven.
