Neurodiverse Teenage Girls Post Reply

Hi - just wondering if there are any neurodiverse teens in the Balham / Wandsworth / Clapham area (around 11-13 so more the "tweenager" age group rather than older) who might be interested in meeting up - so any girls who might be autistic / aspergers or ADHD or just quirky. I am looking to try and expand my daughters social group and would really like for her to be able to meet more girls a bit more like her and who are local. Please do PM me if this is something you might like to explore. These teenage years are hard enough but even harder for those girls who have some social challenges.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen somewhere that someone set up a group for this very reason. Might be lavender something? Might be someone connected with NAS Lambeth branch. Provably worth a post in one of the local Facebook groups - ASD Child in SW London or ASD SW London.

I’d be really interested in a meet up. I have an adhd 11 year old daughter who will be starting secondary school in September but who could definitely do with some more “quirky” friends.

If you haven't already, try Lavender https://m.facebook.com/lavenderndg/ - they run groups and workshops and the Facebook group is a good place to make connections.

There is a local branch of National Autistic Society for Wandsworth - they are quite new and I think just focused on Adults - but that may have changed.

You could also look at A2NdVoice based in tooting - it’s run by Venessa Bobb who has done a lot of work focusing on BAME issues but she also focuses on issues for AS girls/teens/women and is very well informed.

Facebook SEN fun London is worth a look.  Also has links to other groups which may be more appropriate for early teens like your girl. 

I too have a child diagnosed with autism. He is six but gets along with a very diverse range of ages  and abilities and is very social but has no siblings.  The most obvious issue he has is speech delay.   I would love him to have more playdates.   We have toys, a trampoline, an inflatable pool in the garden but what he loves most of all is the company of other children while mums / dads / carers have a cuppa.

I'm just dropping into this older post to see if any of you found any great ASD meet ups for teenage girls in the area.

My daughter is 14 and would love to meet other girls of her age who are also high-functioning neurodivergent. Sadly she is the only girl in her year at school so is feeling a bit lonely.

I am setting up a group for autistic girls of primary school age with support from NAS.

A playful, calm setting where autistic girls can meet kindred spirits and have some fun.

Once we’re fully operational (we’re still at set up stage with training, insurance etc etc) we could look at widening the upper age range.

Hi, I just joined NappyValleyNet because I saw this chat. I wondered if any of you found any ASD meet ups for teenage girls in the area?
My daughter is 15. She is a high-functioning neurodivergent in that she is doing well in school academically. However, she is very lonely and has withdrawn from all her previous friendships as they "don't get her" and she now finds social situations highly stressful (ASD diagnosis last year after masking for years). To avoid the anxiety of socialising, she prefers to stay home and now rarely goes anywhere other than to/from school and is becoming increasingly isolated. I think she just needs to meet some nice and kind other girls around the same age who are also neurodivergent.

I think there is quite a demand for this sort of thing, the question is finding something they all enjoy doing and then organising it. Maybe organise a craft club? Something that encourages conversation.

We eventually found a girls youth group for academic years 9 & 10 through WAAS (Wandsworth Autism Advisory Service).

My daughter has only been once so far but is much looking forward to her second session today - they run in blocks of 6.

Hello all.

What a great post. I would be up for helping to organise a meet up for those that would be interested. My DD is 10 and has ADHD, and has found primary school and friendships a tricky thing to navigate, so I would be really keen in helping get a regular get together arranged for those interested. Maybe they could do a once a month meet up doing something different each time - maybe something art or bracelet making to begin, we can then organise things like slimemaking, cookery, a cinema trip, wall climbing -  something that they all would be happy to give a go.

Hi everyone, 

I set up the Autistic Girls Club in the Scout Hut in Lyford Road on Wednesdays during term time 3.30-5.30pm. It’s a free weekly drop-in club for autistic girls and their parents to meet some kindred spirits in a calm and accepting environment. We are a National Autistic Society Club so our volunteers have all the necessary training, checks etc. 

All ages and stages are welcome Please note that any attendees need to be accompanied by a parent or carer. 

We have a different arts and crafts table each week, plus Lego, bubbles, dressing up, toys and tea and coffee for parents and carers. You can check it out on Instagram to see the space.

We have two session left this term - this Wednesday 26th and Wednesday 3rd July.

The arts and crafts might feel on the younger side for your teen girls but they would be very welcome anyway as the age typically ranges from 5 - 11. On the 3rd July we are planning a picnic, so it could be a good chance for the girls to meet others ahead of the summer break. It’s a lovely outside space.
