magdalen estate - springfield development

Postby buttonqueen » Sun Oct 16, 2011 2:58 pm

hi. we are thinking of buying a house on the magdalen estate but have just found out that there is a planning application in to develop a large housing estate on the springfield hospital site. although this hasn't been approved yet i'm a little concerned that if it were to be the value of houses on certain roads in the magdalen estate would decrease given increased traffic etc. i'd be really interested to hear the views of anyone already living in that area. thanks in advance.

We recently purchased a house in the area.

We looked into - no way to be sure but we hope whatever happens that it wouldn't impact too drastically this area.It was not enough to dissuade us from buying.
It's been turned down twice and this is the final appeal. I think if there is traffic impact it will affect the entire area in terms of traffic, not just the Magdalen Estate - perhaps the Glenburnie side more so? But it was turned down for the very reasons you are concerned.

We hope that if there is a development it will be sensitively and very well done, and will only enhance the area (if they do go ahead I'd like to see a big park, a great leisure centre / art space / family friendly areas, a good cafe where I can get coffee with the baby, a fresh food market would be nice, lovely architecture that sits nicely with the old hospital buildings - am I dreaming?!?). It seems that everyone on all sides of Springfield hospital have a lot at stake and so hope the planning process and community will ensure the site is developed well - if and whenever it is developed. Guess we all just need to get involved.

We LOVE the area, the schools, the Common, our neighbours. Everyday we wake up and are glad we moved here. Good luck house hunting!

thanks very much for that. i only found out about it before we were due to exchange so had a bit of a panic. agree with you that looking at the proposals - if they get through - it seems it will be well done with quite a lot of green space remaining. i'd love all the other things you mentioned too. anyway very much looking forward to moving and was glad to hear you like it

The green space in this area is mostly "Metropolitan Open Land", and thus fiercely protected, the current Springfield planning application increases the amount of open space.

Hopefully the land currently used for Golf may be given over to park land and team sports, this will create a fantastic environment. The proposal to dedicate the land to team sports and general leisure seems to carry favour with many, inlcuding the council, Sport England and many national Sports Authorities

South London needs this additional public green space, the Hospital Trust are trying to do great things here - let's give them our support
