I think the message title is rather exaggerated.
I agree the post is very judgmental , understandable, but who makes the rules about whether you have to get out of your car to socialise when you drop a child at school.
If OP 'hates' the parents, steer clear surely.
I wouldn't overtly project my judgments onto my child, especially with such a strong word as 'hate'. I think there must be some more elements to the story, lost friendship between women, anger and bitterness which has nothing to do with a child and their school mates - these usually change in secondary anyway.

Like your title suggests my only thoughts are -poor child and yes the sins of parents do carry through .
In your shoes I'd let them be friends but keep my guard up and have play dates at your home. Its not the child's fault after all, is it?

I had a similar experience with a friend’s family, and it was tough deciding what to do. It’s hard to watch someone you care about go through this but protecting your daughter is important. I agree with your DH that it’s good for kids to choose their friends, but setting boundaries is key, too. If things get worse, it’s okay to step back. Also, there are some rehab clinics that help with alcohol addiction, too, which might be helpful if you feel comfortable suggesting it. Take care!
