Big Green Egg - are they worth it?

Postby Freds Gang » Fri May 17, 2024 4:06 pm

Contemplating geting a 'Big Green Egg' v a traditional bbq. Love the name  ;)  and the look of them but but they aren't cheap.
Wondering if anyone who has bought one thinks that they are worth the money, we would probably go for a large or an extra large for social events?

Yes, we love ours and have quite a few friends who have them, and for the bbq expert the Green Egg wins hands down. We have the MiniMax as it sits nicely on a table, we are a smaller family and don't have a huge garden, but it still manages to feed a crowd when we've entertained if you're clever with the timing as it keeps it heat a long time.  We've done fish, shoulder of lamb, spatchcock chickens etc all really easily on it.  My husband was not a bbq fan before and hated our Weber charcoal one, so we did a lot of a research and settled with this and he's now coverted, we use it a lot even in the winter and the taste is amazing.

I second the comment above. We have the big one. We ve done all of the above plus roast chicken and pizzas.
I need to try it for cakes - a french chef Helene Darroz has done many.
For us totally worth the money

We were having the same debate last year. To help us decide we did a ceramic BBQ cooking class (highly recommend London barbecue school, though very tough to get a spot!) which really helped us see these barbecues in action and what is possible with them. We have since bought one and no regrets here - you can use it all year round.
However - we didn’t go for the green egg but Kamado which are essentially the same, but red and cheaper (and came recommended by the BBQ class). We are very happy with ours.
