Advice on getting a puppy cocker spaniel ?

Postby Localhappymum » Mon Feb 05, 2024 6:19 pm

Hi all,
We are a local family, and thinking of getting a "show type" cocker spaniel in a few weeks.
I want to make sure we make an informed decision, and I would love to hear any tips, good advice and things to look out for.
Any recommendations on good breeders? How long in advance should I contact one?
What are things to consider when choosing a male or female?
Anything we should do before welcoming the puppy?
Once the puppy is here? any good contacts ( vet, insurance etc..)
Thank you so much for any tips,

Best

Hi LocalHappyMum.
Show Cockers are wonderful dogs.
As will all puppies I would highly recommend early training to put in the basics and also to make sure that as the pup gets older it can be left on its own for a while without separation anxiety.
Good socialisation with other dogs and people is also beneficial.
Cockers are very friendly, great with kids (we had one boarding only last night).

Have you looked at a Cockalier? Cocker with King Charles Spaniel. The Kind Charles Spaniel is one of my top first dogs for a family and the mix can be great.

Dog or **** is personal preference. I would advise having either spayed or neutered around 12 months (or after the first season with the ****) for many reasons. Health being one and not having to spend your Sunday afternoon on a walk trying to find your cocker who might run off if he picks up scent of a **** in season. Cockers have very good noses and spend quite a bit of time snuffling/sniffing around.

You can also get a special water bowl which curves in at the top to stop said ears dipping in the water and dripping all over your kitchen.

I've got to fly out the door but if you would like any other info please email me dom@thedogfatheruk.com

All the best.
Dom

Hi localhappymum

We have a show type cocker and getting her is the best thing we’ve ever done! She has the best temperament and is a perfect family dog!

A few local gems are
Dog and groom in Bellevue road for grooming, we do need to clip her every 8-10 weeks as her coat is very thick

The urban vet in Earlsfield. Absolutely fantastic vets, would highly recommend

We have an amazing dog Walker called Mike Langdon, should you need one!

+44 7976 364428

We’ve been using him for almost 8 years and he is trustworthy, reliable and our dog loves him! Handy if you want to go on holiday and you already have someone your dog knows

I have a few breeder contacts as we are on a waiting list for a puppy!
Trinkaurity Cockers

Do message me if you have any other questions

Hi

Before you get a puppy I would recommend reading Steve Manns book - easy peasy puppy squeasy. It’s great for being prepared! When you look for a dog trainer check out IMDT and APDT for accredited trainers. I work in the Wandsworth area so if you want more advice drop me email at info@superdogtrainers.com

Puppies are gorgeous but a lot more work than people think! Definitely worth getting one in the spring when house training is easier. Good luck with your search, make sure you meet the mum and the dad when selecting a puppy - you can learn a lot about the temperament from meeting the parents.

On neutering I would wait and see - some dogs I would advise leaving the neutering until later depending on temperament. Two of my four dogs are not neutered as yet and the youngest is 2.

Local Happy Mum:  Why on earth are you thinking of getting a dog from a breeder?!!  There's any number of non 'show type' dogs in rescue centres looking for loving homes.  Do the right thing & get one of those instead.

Hear hear Dimelda! Please, please have a really good luck at rescue websites before you buy a puppy from a breeder - many rescue dogs are fully house-trained and socialised, so you might even be able to avoid that part of new puppy ownership by rescuing. The world does not need any more puppies deliberately bred when there are so many lovely animals languishing in shelters (however beautifully run) who need a good home with loving people - lots of adult/young dogs but puppies too in many shelters!

Getting a puppy is exciting! When looking for a "show type" cocker spaniel, finding a reputable breeder is key. Start researching early and visit the breeder to see how they treat their dogs. Male or female? It depends on your preference—females may be more nurturing, males can be goofier. Before bringing your pup home, puppy-proof your place—think chew toys and safe spaces. Once your furball arrives, find a vet pronto and consider pet insurance for peace of mind.
