'Trying new stuff can be scary. But when children know that itโs okay to mess up, theyโre more willing to take risks and seek out more interesting and inventive solutions.
โ
Children need a safe and supportive place to try new things in writing. When they feel safe to make mistakes, they're more likely to be creative and grow.
โ
It's important to gently guide and support them, but ultimately your child should be doing the โheavy liftingโ rather than you or their teacher.

If I donโt know how to spell a word, I'll admit that Iโm not sure and say it's okay because I can look it up! This helps children to see that itโs ok to โnot knowโ and that tapping into a state of resourcefulness is key.
โ
โ
I tell them that famous authors work on multiple drafts. This helps to normalise perseverance and improvement over the dreaded perfectionism, which is more of a hindrance than a help.
โ
I encourage children to keep a personal writing journal, so they have a private space to express their thoughts, ideas and feelings.
โ
As a teacher, I may highlight my own moments of struggle with writerโs block and how I work through them.'
