The Moped crash scam - has your Car been crashed into yet ?

Postby readysteadycook » Thu Jun 13, 2024 4:58 pm

As many people are realising, there is a gang of men on scooters that are doing fake crashes into our cars.

The men are all foreign, many Brazilian.

It’s happening in Balham, Tooting, Furzdown, Clapham and all over London.

They often target lone women.

Lots of posts on Nextdoor and a What’sApp group has been set up for some of those affected. There is also an article about it in the Times :-

Have you been affected ? Let us know what happened here ..

If it has happened to you, please report it to the police and also to the Insurance Fraud website :-

Thank you very much for this information and helpful links. I was so shocked to see video footage of this happening on our street in SW11 and want to be prepared in case it happens to me or other neighbours.

Happening loads. 3 of them in 1 day on the same stretch of road. Same MO, they target old people & mothers as they exit a junction . They sit near a junction and then just ram into you or they drive around looking for people. Deliberately ramming their scooter into you , causing damage and causing them to fall off. They then quickly get the camera out to video it all and start shouting it’s your fault.

Best thing to do it is stay clam, check everyone is ok, call the police to attend and start videoing them + damage . Ask them to remove their helmet , as getting their face on camera is key .. they won’t like that.

Often these guys just want cash from you to walk away or they claim for everything on your insurance saying it’s your fault - injury , damage etc. Often the policy isn’t in the name of the person that hit you, hence get their face on photo or video as evidence . Often their policy is bought a few days before and it’ll be a 50yr man insured but mopped driver is clearly 25 yrs old. Hence good evidence to dispute and prove a fraud by videoing them . They really don’t like being videoed back and stating to them it’s a fraud and you will report to the police the fraud.

I’m sure they will move onto a new area once it’s too hot around here

Get a dashcam.  Cheap and easy to fit.  If an incident like this occurs, just point to the dashcam and tell them to go away, or something similar.

This happened to me in December last year.
A lone female driver , I was turning out of Melody Road in Wandsworth very slowly 5mp
and a scooter with a Brazilian driver who claimed to speak no English , hit my car head on.
Intially the insurance company blamed me for the incident, but when I received a text from a company called Mcams asking for my version of events , it flagged up with my insurers as suspicious.
The driver of the bike had just purchased it a few days earlier, and claimed extensive damage , even though there wasn’t a scratch on it (the collision was minor) and he drove it away.
I’ve now got a dash cam as apparently they don’t target people with dash cams.

One of our vehicles caught this on camera on Upper Richmond Road.

The victims insurers, car driver’s, have the video.

A very obvious scam TBH.

Hopefully some arrests: fingers crossed!

I too was involved in what I believe to be this scam yesterday afternoon near Balham. The rider had plenty of time to stop but still proceeded to make contact and after like 3 seconds upright decided to drop the moped sideways on my car. Luckily I had an eyewitness which saw everything and even told me this is a reoccurring thing in the area and that it was a scam hence why I found this thread. The rider was also Brazilian as well as the caller from the private company MCAMS (even sounds like scams). Do not give them any information and please stay safe!
