Is Crumpet Northcote Rd closing?

Postby Tigger » Mon Dec 12, 2011 1:33 pm

Does anyone know if Crumpet on Northcote Road is closing? We have just been asked to comment on a planning application by Phase Eight for 66 Northcote Road...

spoke to a staff member this afternoon and it is 'unofficially' true. shame because when I was on the 'northcote road pram parade' it was a great place to go for a bacon sandwich and a coffee. plenty of space and a very good change/toilet area.

can't say I'm too excited about another chain store of womens' clothing ;)

I'm not keen on chainstores either, but prefer them to yet another estate agent. Hamptons is moving into the old carpet shop - yawn.

Oh what a shame, are they moving elsewhere?
Phase Eight - how dull. Although certainly not as dull as Hamptons!

I think, and only think that if the lease is being advertised on Bellevue Road too, that would indicate that's it. Shame. :(

I'm so sorry to hear this. It's one of the few places that has a decent-sized children's play area, and the food is lovely too.

Shop by shop ncote road is becoming a chain store market because rents are too high for independents. Webbs rd will be the home for independents but they still find it tough take colour cafe rammed in term time and dead in hols ...

Phase eight!?!? Really boring.
Slowly Northcote Rd is becoming Kings Rd, shame!
I was not a huge fan of crumpets (not because of them) but at least they were independant, friendly and it was a good alternative. Didnt realise they were struggling, they are always packed! Really sad about that.

One on Allfarthing Road closed ages ago so would presume they've been struggling for a while.

I am really surprised by all the 'support' for Crumpet. When it first opened, it was indeed brilliant and somewhere that you could take children and no one minded about the noise etc! Food was indeed delicious (especially the cakes ;))

But in the last year, both sites have become SO grubby and expensive. I refused to go back when my three year old came out of the loos with soaking feet (he was in Crocs) and when I went to investigate they were leaking sewerage and my youngest picked up old sausages from the floor that looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months. Tables, chairs, highchairs always dirty and sticky. It was disgusting. I realise keeping a children friendly cafe clean must be hard, but others do it! They genuinely would have kept my custom if they gave the sites a good scrub every once in a while.

As for Gails, it is the only coffee shop that actually serves decent coffee...

Coffee - taste of the beholder clearly but I give you Jamie Oliver's Recipease as outstanding coffee 8-)

Your account of Crumpet sounds dreadful and thankfully never happened in my infrequent visits. If that was the 'norm' for any period of time, that would kill off any business.

Sadly matches my experience of it too. I always found it really quite grubby and also found the chairs uncomfy to sit on, they reminded me of school!
Shame that it's a clothes chain coming in it's place but am glad it's not another coffe shop, frozen yoghurt shop, ice cream parlour or estate agent! Also a little relieved it's not an independent clothes store as the few there are already are pretty unaffordable to the majority.

I love gail's coffee although i rarely go there because i think it is a rip off and difficult to go in there with a buggy!
I refuse to give my custom to recipease because i dont agree that simply because you have a famous name you can charge 15% more, even though i like the man.
The only reason i was not going to crumpet very often is because sometimes some people would use it as a childcare and would let the children being little tyran to the others. It happened twice so i decided to go as little as possible. But the other times i went and it didnt happen i thought that is a lovely place and my children like it there.
