Live out au pairs

Postby milliesmum » Sat Feb 18, 2012 11:18 pm

I have had three great live in au pairs...but I'd quite like my spare room back and the place to ourselves at weekends. My girls are 5 and 9 so we don't really need a nanny. Can you get live out au pairs? Anyone know their rate? Do they have to haves tax and NI paid ..unlike live in au pairs? Husband and I both work Fulltime in demanding jobs. Am dithering as to what is best for all of us...as opposed to me.

I'm glad you posted this, as I've been wondering about it myself.

My idea was to rent a room in a shared flat/house, proved au pair with meals in family home, and then pay the same as a live-in au pair. Not sure if that would work - will be interested to see if you get any other replies.

I've never had an au pair, daughter currently in nursery full time, but not sure what will happen when she reaches school age.

We went through this situation when our nanny returned to NZ. Basically a live out au pair is an oxymoron. You are liable for tax and NI unless they can demonstrate they are self employed. Even then their status can technically be challenged if you are the overwhelming supplier of work or set specific conditions to that person.

However I have 'heard' that some people pay cash and assume the nanny has sorted their paperwork out. On your head be it though ;)

My suggestion would be to see if you can find a local teenager (if they exist?!) to help you out.

Alternatively, investigate your schools after hours care and any local childminders who do school pick ups. This way you pay for what you need as opposed to a general payment for rent etc that might be excessive.

I do a swap system with a local mum that also works well - but more suited to part timers who work different days.

Good luck!

Maybe try putting up advert on this site and/or Gumtree explaining the hours you require, duties to be performed, that it is live out and if you like remuneration you offer. I would think somewhere betwen 8 - 10 pounds an hour would get you applicants. You would be surprised how many people are looking for this type of role where live out suits. Maybe you can discuss tax needs with applicants as you interview them.

I have heard of this! I have a friend who lives in a little village in Hampshire and a lof of her friends have this set up . The au pairs live in a shared house, provided by the agency.

I think it would very hard to do in London due to high rental costs.

I think you will get a better deal by using an agency, I think Likeminders provides part time nannies, and it's only £8,50 an hour. Nannies are paying their own tax, and agency can provide them a morning job as well, if you only need after school care.
