Child's First Passport - Turnaround Time

Postby HoneyB » Tue Apr 10, 2012 12:16 pm

On the advice sheet it says it takes 6 weeks - has anyone applied for one recently - did it take this long?

Both my children's passports only took 2 weeks if that. As long as you've done the paper work correctly, paid the right amount and it's a straight forward application, it should be quick.

Think it also depends on the time of year you apply. I got my son's just before the summer rush (May-ish time) and it took 4 weeks.

If you have a British passport then the application should be a quick turnaround as your citizenship is proven and your child will take their citizenship from you. If you don't have a passport then the passport agency need to determine how your child is a british citizen and that's why it may take up to six weeks. You can speed things up a little by going via the check n send service at the Post Office who will ensure you have filled the paperwork correctly and the passport photos are up to specification. You have to pay for this service.
I think it was a 10 day turnaround for my son back in November.

2 weeks for us too. I think they state 6 weeks to be covered in case something goes wrong!

I got my twins' (and my renewed) passport turned around within 7 days last February. I would thoroughly recommend paying for the post office's Check & Send service, I know that helped speed things up.

I agree with PeasePudding . If you go through the PO check and send service and everything is in order , it takes less than 2 weeks. We applied in Dec and got the passport back long before christmas .

You can get a british passport in a day if you ring up and book an appointment. You have to pay more for this but I did it as I needed a passport for my son quickly and my husband is not british and I am but was not born in this country so needed to show a lot of paperwork
