Bottle refusal - recommend a lactation consultant?

Postby laura b » Tue May 08, 2012 1:30 pm

Hi,
I have been mainly breastfeeding though giving the occasional bottle of expressed milk to my baby when it was convenient for my partner to give it or when we were out and about. He has had no problem switching between breast and bottle... until last week! We didn't give a bottle for a week and a half as there was no need, and now he flatly refuses it and gets really upset when we try. He's just turned 12 weeks. I have just read that this is often the first decision babies make around the 3 month time - I wish I'd read this earlier and I would have been much more consistent with bottle feeding!

Anyone else faced this problem and solved it? Any tips on how to crack this problem are welcome!

And can anyone recommend a lactation consultant who specialises in solving bottle refusal issues?

Many thanks in advance,
Laura

Hi
I'm seeing a lactation consultant called Kathrine Fisher, her no is 07949176776. She's been great for me. You could call her to see if she could help. She did quite a lengthy free telephone consultation for me before i decided to go to see her.

Both of my twins did the same thing at that age. They didn't even have a week and a half off, they just got more and more annoyed with bottles until they totally refused.

I later heard some advice from Geraldine at Let's Breastfeed which might have helped if I'd heard it at the time. It was around keeping things as relaxed as possible - just having the bottle around etc etc over quite a long time.

My little boy did exactly the same thing at that age and I had been religiously giving him a bottle occasionally. We got there in the end without having to go cold turkey on him just by offering a bottle every so often, he just one day drank 4 or 5 oz which although isn't a massive amount is enough to sa he can do it. I then went away for the weekend and he quickly got the message that bottles were it! I would say just keep perseveringly in a relaxed way ie no issue if he refuses for a while. All the best!
