Potty training advice!

20 months, little girl not interested at all in potty training! She has a potty training book, which she loves, but throws a wobbly at the mention of her own potty!

Has extremely stubborn streak and i suspect may be refusing just because she can sense this potty business may carry some special signifigance to mummy and daddy!

Any tips? Xxx

Hi there,
I wouldn't worry too much as 20 months is still pretty young. Great that she likes the book though, all good ground work before crackdown! If I were you I'd park it til she is a bit older... I didn't start properly until my little boy was 30 months (although I am lead to believe girls tend to be ready sooner than boys!) He then nailed it pretty quickly at that point.

My daughter used to kick and scream if we tried to put her on a potty. She developed a complete aversion. Like your daughter, she's quite a strong character and very stubborn, so we just left it for a couple of months, didn't make a fuss and came back to it.

We didn't potty train as early as you, we first tried at 27 months and had success at around 30 months. Every child is different, but I do believe that the bigger deal/ drama you make about it, the tougher it will be.

Our daughter eventually got the hang of it, but it was tough as she took ages to stop pooing in her pants ( two months of that after she got the hang of wees) but now she's great! I think if you have a stubborn child, it can be more of a battle, but I promise you will get there!

Our best purchase was the princess potty book- it was great and made it seem a bit more fun.

We've just potty trained our daughter. She's one month shy of 2 1/2 and I waited and waited untl she was showing a real interest and then she nailed it in 4 days. I'd heard that if you wait until they're ready it can be quite a quick process. We had potties around the house for several months before hand and would chat about it, read the books etc. Sometimes she's do a wee or poo in the potty but mainly she wasn't terribly intersted. Only when a couple of her friends were in pants did she become interested in wearing pants and using the loo too. One day I picked her up from nursery and they told me that she had asked to use the loo like her best buddy now does. I decided The Time Had Come and we went cold turkey on the nappies over the bank holiday weekend. There were a few accidents at first - though not as many as I was anticipating. By day 5 she had completely got the hang and was telling us when she needed to go. We haven't had an accident since.
