Fifty Shades of AWFUL!

Postby Squinkle » Tue Jun 19, 2012 4:07 pm

I did it. I bought the book. I really wanted to know what all the fuss was about, and I can see why people are so gripped by it as I will admit that I would like to know what happens to the characters, so I will read it until the end... however, it is making me very cross!! Surely a woman writing for other women should be sending an empowering message out there, and not "oh, he's so good looking, I don't want to do any of the things he's asking me to do, I feel really uncomfortable and I don't like it but I just fancy him so much that I'll do it anyway". Er, hello?! I think we're a bit past that now, seeing as it's 2012 and all!

OK, rant over, how is everyone else finding it? Is it just me who is enraged by the lack of girl power?! No spoilers please (like I said I am going to finish it)!

Badly written bad ******, expertly hyped to make it sound frightfully intellectual and modern. But it's still badly written bad ******.

Hey!

Well I have 1 more chapter to go!

The character does rather go on a bit, and the book can she can be quite repetitive! I find the book is 'OK' - But do not know what all the fuss is about, even so, would not mind reading the other books within the Triology! To me it is rather like a Mills and Boons based book, a tad more raunchier!!

x Happy Reading x

Don't know what you're talking about, loved the book
Bought all three finishing the 3rd, not sure what I'll do once it's over
It's supposed to be a distraction not a classic English novel

All of my friends have read the first book and cannot wait to read the next two (and are at various stages). I decided not to read it because to be honest, the sex bit usually bores me and I just flick through the pages but I have to say, not one of my girlfriends has told me not to bother reading it. They have all loved it and now I think I'm missing out and might just have to bite the bullet. After all, it has sold quicker than the Harry Potter books so I'd rather read it and make my own mind up! Hmm, think I've just convinced myself and might have to go to WHSmiths tomorrow!

I bought the trilogy and agree that the first one is really terrible. I'm not a book snob and love trashy books, so thought I'd love it but it was boring and annoyingly written. But, I've just started the 2nd book as I was annoyed to have bought all 3 only to bin them, and I have to say its much better! I'm actually, dare I say it, quite gripped!

I bought all three books. I was initially put off by negative reviews but decided to buy it to see what all the fuss was about.
I liked the first one, the other two, not so much. It is a shame because I rushed to buy the last two because I wanted to know how it would all end.
Yes, her writing style is repetitive and sometimes annoying. The female main character seemed schizophrenic sometimes!
It is like marmite, you either hate or love it. The author put her experience as a former TV executive to good use and has marketed it heavily with astonishing sales as a result.
It has at least opened up the erotica genre (to me anyway). I feel like she had a great idea for a book and should have let someone else write it so the prose would be much better

I refuse to read it. Not my kind of thing.
