Can't wear my wedding rings after breast feeding

Postby Balham3838 » Fri Aug 17, 2012 6:07 pm

I wonder if anyone else has had this problem and has any suggestions/ solutions?

All through my pregnancy I could wear my wedding rings and was really pleased not to ever get swollen fingers etc... But ever since I've been breastfeeding (7 months now) I have not been able to wear them.

My finger breaks out in painful red splotches (for want of a better description) where my rings are.

They are diamond and platinum so it shouldn't be an allergy. The GP suggested Hydrocortisone cream which helps bring the redness down but it comes back as soon as I put my rings on again.

I will do anything to be able to wear them again - private dermatologist, alternative/ Wibble wobble.....

Help!!!!

hi... sounds like eczema rather anything specifically related to breastfeeding? try changing the soaps you are using and avoiding detergents as much as possible! also just dry the area under your rings properly whenever you wash your hands. hopefully it'll help!

A friend of mine became allergic to platinum - she thought wouldn't be possible but seems it can! She had her rings dipped in something to coat them and then she could wear them again. I'm not sure what it was- probably worth a google.

I doubt it's the breastfeeding, far more likely that with a new baby you are washing your hands lots..? And the soapy water gets stuck round your rings.

I had this too, and found switching hand wash cured mine. I now use the Method self-foaming one which you can get from ocado. Has to be the foaming one, the regular soap ones all bring the rash right back.

If it isn't the soap it might also be the baby wipes. Or baby bath - even th 'natural' ones can be quite harsh. Basically you need to try eliminating one at a time lots of products that your hands come into contact with. Hope you find the culprit soon...

I had just that. I got a cream for the fingers, then disinfected the rings, used vinegar and hot water I think. Then you have to dry the rings whenever you wash your hands, or wash them less.. It can't have lasted long, but now can't remember when it stopped so must have been straightforward! Never had probs since, incl 2 nd baby so I don't think the platinum allergy thing can be right.

I had this too, I can't use the original fairy liquid as it will bring the skin under mt fingers out in a an itchy red rash which will then peel :( leave the rings off until heals then switch soap or washing up liquid to see if it helps! Good luck

I had this too with my first baby, doesn't seem to be happening now with hte second. Had to get very strong eczema ointment from my GP and use every night, lasted for a long time but the ointment was great. I think it was more down to washing my hands so much plus wipes etc as a PP has said, also the weather at the time.
