ENT specialist

Postby young at heart » Fri Aug 31, 2012 11:17 am

My GP has recommended that my two year old has his tonsils and adenoids out as soon as possible ( interfering with sleep , constant ear infections etc)
I am lucky enough to have private medical insurance so may be able to go private . Has anyone had a similar experience and able to reccomend someone?
Many thanks in advance

We used Ben Hartley at the Portland. He is supposed to be among the top in his field. We had adenoids removed and grommets inserted (twice).

We saw Victoria Moore-Gillon at The Lister:

Although in the end my daughter didn't need surgery, the two appointments we had with her were brilliant, she really knew her stuff, and was kind, reassuring and answered all our questions.

The lady who did the audiology tests was great too (I can't remember her name, but if you see Victoria you'll probably see her at some point).

We have BUPA and this was covered by that.

Good luck!

Victoria Moore-Gillion at the Lister was fantastic. My son had tonsils adenoids and grommets done with her. I always felt comfortable and trusted her completely. She also works with a very good anesthesist which I think is really important.

Unfortunately I can't say I had a very positive experience with Doctor Daya at Parkside.

Mr Daya works for St georges hospital but also has his private clinic on Harley street. He is very good. down to earth and specialized with kids with adenoids and tonsils problem. I have seen him with my 2yr son with NHS and - although we decided not to go ahead with surgery - he is still following up my son (who's 5 now) to check that tonsils are not an issue anymore.

We are seeing Mr Daya in his Harley St clinic. He is brilliant. And was so reassuring and so good at explaining when my little one was so sick a year ago.
I cannot praise him enough. We saw him through our Bupa.

I was in the same situation as you two years ago. I did a lot of research and all roads led to Ben Hartley of Great Ormond Street and The Portland.
My son, who was 3.5, had his tonsils and adenoids out at the Portland. I can thoroughly recommend Ben Hartley, the operation went very smoothly and swiftly. Crucially, Ben Hartley works with a very eminent Paeds Anaesthetist called Dr Adrian Lloyd-Thomas. Having to watch someone put your child to sleep is the worst part of the process. The methods employed by Dr Lloyd-Thomas and his team were simply incredible and it was obvious we were in the hands of the best. My son has nothing buut fond memories of the whole experience.

Hi,

Not necessarily what you are looking for but if you want a "patient's" point of view, I had those removed when I was around 6 years old due to many ear infections and loss of hearing. I don't remember being in pain and it worked!

We saw Victoria Moore-Gillan at the Lister too and she was absolutely fantastic. My daughter was nearly 4 when she had her tonsils and adenoids removed and I was 8 months pregnant so the timing wasn't amazing but Victoria couldn't have been nicer and kept us both calm! My only advice would be to make sure you are waiting outside the theatre when your LO when wakes up from the anaesthetic, I was told to wait in the room and they would call me when she was awake but by the time I waddled down 2 floors she was hysterical having woken up in pain surrounded by people she didn't know! On the plus side, she made a quick recovery (1 week) and we've had no problems since. It is horrible to watch your child go through an operation and subsequent recovery but they won't do it unless it's absolutely necessary. Good luck.

I just wanted to add my recent experience for anyone not covered under hospital insurance (like me who had recently moved to the UK and preexisting illness were not covered for first couple of years despite having private health insurance for years in our home country). My nearly 4 y.o had his tonsils and adenoids removed last Thursday as a day procedure at St Georges hospital. Everyone there was brilliant, the nurses, the anaesthetist & the surgeon on duty that day, she was great also. From the first appt at the hospital, to his speedy admission on to the waiting list, then only 3 months waiting and then the surgery everything has been brilliant. He is now still recovering but really has no idea that he just had surgery, that is how well he is going!

I also recommend staying close to recovery. They wake up from the anaesthetic very confused and not so much pain, but unsure of what is going on, what happened to them and generally upset to the point they may be unresponsive to your reassurances for a while. St Georges gave us a beeper to let us know when we could come in and it was 45 mins after he went for the op. While waking he dozed in between the crying sessions and eventually every time he woke up he woke up better.

Hello ladies

I know the ENT surgeons a little TOO well. My son was born with a tumour in his airway nearly 10 years ago and it is so rare that we spent a lot of time with Mr Daya at SGH as well as Ben Hartley at GOSH.

They are both excellent and Mr Daya works in Harley Street. He is now a good friend of ours and he is excellent. Contact him through ENT4kids website.

Our son's condition stretched them no end and Mr Daya certainly rose to the occasion. Mr Hartley is lovely but we didn't have that much to do with him in the end.

Good luck
Silvia
