Questions about nanny wages please!

Postby supergirl » Wed Sep 05, 2012 3:06 pm

Hi there

Well since i am a novice in the wonderful world of employing nannies and since we want to be very fair, i would be very grateful if you could guide me in the following:

- which company (online or not) do you use to sort out the salary slips, liaison with hmrc, ni contribution, etc. and how much do you pay them as a fee (monthly, yearly?)
- what kind of contract do you give the nanny, can i download a standard one?
- how many weeks holidays to you pay them and can you "impose" the weeks the nanny can take off so it coincides with yours?
- do you pay the nanny monthly or weekly?
- what should we particularly mention in the contract that being a novice i might not think of?

I am more than grateful for anyone who can help me.

Regards. Sx

Haven't yet done a contract but having just done everything else this week....

Nanny tax can sort out all your tax, NI and payslips - the annual fee is something like £270.

If you look on their website they have all of the holiday/sick pay details on there - I think it's five weeks but that's pro rata so depends how many days your nanny actually works each week.

most people I know choose half their holiday days and then the nanny chooses the other half if that makes sense?

you can pay however often you/your nanny prefer.

hope that helps and hopefully someone else can help you re contracts.

We used Nanny Tax and they are great. They give payslips and such.. you just have to pay them the tax and NI, I think mine was on direct debit every 3 months.

Holiday pay is a bit tricky. 20 days is what I gave my nannies. I always asked for a months notice for anything longer than a day off. And also, asked that they use 10 days (1/2) with our planned holiday and the other 10 was at their discretion. This avoided double childcare costs as my MIL or mother usually was able to cover.

Sick pay, well, I kinda didn't mention anything about this until they fell ill. I had a Nanny who called in sick 10 days in her first 3 months of work. I paid her for the first few and then had to stop as it was too much. She understood and it was fine. I also had a nanny that only called in sick a few times days in over a year and she was always paid for them.

I believe you can download Nanny contracts from Mr. Google... and amend them yourself. But don't put anything in there you don't want to or feel will be hard to meet. It should be really basic covering things that matter in terms of employment: termination, pay, etc... If it gives anything too specific, you might be bound by it and lose a good Nanny or have to retain a bad one.

Good Luck. It is a minefield but I loved our Nannies!

From nanny's point of view if you wish;

Nanny tax or nannypaye are both good with dealing with tax,in,and all paper work.Nannytax also can help with contract.
You can find contracts online and adjust them to your needs.

Very important is to have sick pay, maternity pay agreed and stated in contract e.i you pay in full for the first lets say 3 days of sick leave ,but what if nanny is sick every two weeks and asks for full sick pay?also if nanny can get unpaid holiday above agreed.

what in your opinion warrant you breaking up contract i.e smoking at work, stealing, having people in your house when not agreed.
Notice of contract ending how long it is yours and nanny's decision but it worked great for me to don't state a date as you don't want to be forced to keep nanny for whole year if your circumstances changed. You just give lets say a month notice.

Expences-kitty money. Will you pay for the playgroups, outings like play zones etc.I had a £20 every week and could use it for fees or small shoping like rice cakes or water for kids.I was also aloud to get coffe for myself but that was just a privilage that is not expected, but very nice:)

Holidays;when stating how many days/weeks check if it is with bank holidays or not.it make a whole difference if you have a nanny for Mondays only and there are many bank holidays on Mondays!
Again when I worked 4 days a week I had 16 days plus bank holidays (there are 8)I usually decided about half of it and familly about other half ,but always parents had the last say.

Being late; What if nanny is constantly late, what if you?

If nanny is Ofsted registered, who pay yearly fee.

that is all I can think of atm ,if you have any questions I'm happy to answer as honestly as possible,I'm a mother myself now and uderstand how important and difficult it all is.

For Payroll, I can recommend taxnanny.co.uk
They do the same job as Nannytax but for £120 py so c.£150 cheaper.
We have used them for 18 months and they are extremely helpful and efficient.

On holidays, the legal minumum for a 5 day week is 28 days py, incl Bank holidays.

A tip - use Taxnanny rather than Nannytax as they only cost around £100 per year wheras Nanny tax cost double.
