Can you tell me about family life in Streatham?

Postby kookiegoddess » Mon Oct 08, 2012 11:12 pm

I might go and view a house there, but not sure of what family life would be like there. Can you tell me about shops, services for kids ie playgrounds etc, and bus services, are there decent pathways if you walk a lot or do you spend yr life driving?

We might be sending our child to Broomwood Hall, so I want to figure out if this is a doable mummy-commute!

Broomwood Hall has a site in Streatham - opposite Tooting Commmon on Garrads Road so no need to commute at all.

Hi
I've lived in streatham for 6years and I'm on mat leave for the second time.
I can honestly say that Streathsm is great for families, there are lots of little playgrounds, baby friendly cafes, pubs and restaurants, the cinema, library and a great mums community.
If you're on Facebook track down 'streatham mums network' to see what's happening.
Look at the website for the manor arms pub as well - they do lots of activities.
Bus services are excellent and it's 15mins to Victoria from streatham hill, 5 mins to balham, wandsworth comm, clap junc. Also direct trains to London bridge. It's really accessible.
Where are you house hunting? That's quite important, there are some no go areas (nearer to streatham station or streatham common) but if you're around streatham hill it's great.
Feel free to ask any more questions or email me privately

Streatham's definitely improving and you certainly get more house for your money than in Clapham or Battersea. I would also have a look at Brixton too if you get the chance as it has lots to offer and the new Brixton Village area of the market (past the Ritzy Cinema, Satay Bar, cross the lights then left) is about the hippest area in South London these days. Properties either side of Acre Lane are particularly desirable as you are just minutes from Clapham Common or Brixton centres. Oh and go for a stroll in Brockwell Park to get a feel for the area...must be one of the best park's in the city and far more to do there than Wandsworth & Clapham Commons...it even houses the famous Lido. Happy house hunting.
