Chicken Pox Vaccine

Postby MPat » Tue Nov 27, 2012 5:40 pm

Hi,

I'm thinking about getting my 3year old daughter vaccinated against Chicken Pox. My daughter has eczema and from things I've read it's not a great combination.

Wanted the following feedback:

Any thoughts pros/cons
- Any side effects from those whose children have been vaccinated
- Where can I get it done. - tried The Wedtover in Wandsworth Common and they currently don't have the vaccine in stock until mid-dec.
- I have a 9 month old son and wondered if anyone knew what the effects would be if he got chicken pox

Your feedback would be much appreciated.

I got my twins vaccinated as my husband had never had chicken pox and it's supposed to be a lot worse in adulthood. I just got a private prescription from my NHS GP and then the NHS nurse administered it for me.

Neither had any side effects although mine have never had any side effects from any vaccine.

My 4 year old had the vaccine earlier this year with no side effects. We had it done at our GP surgery. I called up to make the appointment and they ordered the vaccine in advance, then we just paid when we went in. About £100 I think. It is administered in 2 doses so you have to go back for the second one a few weeks later and they are not fully protected until then (although worth mentioning that it doesn't have a 100% protection rate, I don't know if any vaccine does?) I was also under the impression that the chicken pox vaccine is given as a standard immunisation to children in Australia and the USA...?

My son got chicken pox literally a week before his vaccination appointment! It was kinda hellish for us as one of his pox under his gums necrotised (so his gums started to turn grey/black) so we had to take him to the hospital.
It proved a very hard week for my husband and myself so was cursing the timing!

It is standard in the USA and maybe Canada. My sister in Canada got both her kids the vaccine and no side effects. Also sister -in-law in America also gave it to her boy with no side effects (and she is extremely cautious about such stuff!). I think every child there has it.
During my research I didn't find any adverse reasons not to go for it.

Wish I only had organized myself a bit better to have done it sooner.
Also I hear the later children get chicken pox the worse it can be.
My son has a couple of scars but thankfully nothing too bad and they are fading quite well.

Go for it!

Thanks all - very useful comments.

My GP practice doesn't offer the vaccine privately - do my of you know of any local private clinics?

Yes, Battersea Private GP on Northcote Road does it. Quite expensive, but well worth it if you ask me. We're going for my son's second injection this week and he's had no side effects
