Ideas for weekend activities

Postby muminsw12 » Mon Jan 28, 2013 1:02 pm

I would love to do more organised activities with my 10-month-old but work full-time so can only commit to these at the weekend. Sadly a lot of classes/organised activities only seem to run during the week - or if they have weekend sessions they are targeted at "dads"! :? ...which doesn't bother me too much though it would be nice to be in more mixed company.

Just looking for ideas/inspiration... There's only so much time we can spend at the swings!

Suggestions very welcome!

There are some toddler classes on Saturday morning at the Balham Leisure Centre. Not sure what they are but I walk past after my circuit class and they all seem to be having lots of fun

Hi muminsw12,
This has been a bugbear of mine for a while now and in turns my husband too who looks after our toddler part time during the week and finds it difficult to find things to do that aren't aimed solely at mums. Sometimes it feels equality skipped this area by.
I've been going to tingalingo for a year now since my son was 15 months on a sunday morning. The classes are currently run at Sammy Duder and it is 'our' activity to do together. Its just a 30 minute class but great for introducing the little ones to French. There are now two classes on a Sunday, one aimed at the slightly older children (18 month +) and a later class - 11am I think aimed at younger ones.
I think St Mark's church does a Messy Church once a month on a Saturday and Faylands does saturday mornings once a month aimed at parents although that may be a bit far for you.
I guess as they get older there becomes more options for weekend classes but there is definetely an untapped market for weekend activities for children under 3.

What about swimming lessons on a Sat or a Sun at the Trinity Hydro pool, Mums or Dads.

Gymboree in Clapham do classes on a Saturday, my daughter is 12 months and has been going for 4 months now and absolutely loves them. They do a free trial class so you could try it out. The Saturday classes seem to be about 70/30 mums to dads.

Thanks all! Very helpful.

Mrs Contractor Mum - completely agree re: equality, or rather lack thereof...! Like yours, my husband's in charge for a couple of weekdays a week and he has the opposite problem to me, though I think he is going to go to Gymboree even if he's the only dad there.
