A good architect recommendation please

Postby BettyBoo » Tue Mar 19, 2013 10:37 pm

We are thinking of having our loft converted and kitchen extended in one go. Are we mad with an 18mth old or is it worth it?

However, I want proper drawings done but getting a good recommendation for an architect is not proving easy. I'm sure they are out there. Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks in advance

We used and absolutely recommend Oliver Morgan Architects

One of the best things we ever did was go for proper design rather than the usual bodge it n leg it type builders solution. Reckon the difference the result probably paid for itself 10x over

the other thing you can do is check the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) website for members.

Always check to make sure whoever you use is a member.

Thank you all, I've dropped both an email to see if they can help.

Do you know roughly how much I should expect to pay for drawings?

Can highly recommend Ivan Henshell at The Architects - ivan@thearchitects.co.uk. We are just about to start a very large refurb (basement excavation and kitchen extension) and he has been really great managing the whole process. I also found Wandsworth council very efficient to deal with re planning application.

Good luck with your project!

it really depends on what you want done?

you have what I would describe as enhanced building services (such as the M3 folks recommended by some earlier), not proper architects, but can help you I am sure if you just want some drawings, and maybe some help with the submissions etc.

and by drawings, I mean you know what you want, have the design sorted, and want someone to draft for you.

*IF* however, you want someone to advise, provide design input, recommend alternatives etc. and produce the designs based on that - then you want a proper, RIBA certified architect. They will also be good for managing the project, if you feel you don't want too.

as for cost, that's the thing:

drawings, based on just drafting your ideas (provided they are code compliant etc), should cost in the hundreds. i.e. producing technical drawings.

however, if you want professional architect input, the creative side, then that might be in the 3,000 - 5,000 range say. this would involve consultations, measuring up, drafting alternatives, and providing actual input into how the layout should look, or recommending solutions to any sticky issues you might have,

obviously this can vary, but that's the sort of ball park.

I'd categorise them as building services and architectural services. it all depends on what you need, and both provide fair value for money - all depends on the services.

if you don't know what you want, I would strongly recommend a RIBA architect.

Hi, I used a building firm for my kitchen extension who were wonderful and they introduced us to a lovely architect called Lee, who we instructed directly. Service was good and the price was very competitive. I dont have his telephone number to hand but you can contact the building company and they can provide his details. SLEL Ltd 02036271277

Both my sister in law and brother in law are architects....they may do some private work but would have to ask....they are both brilliant and have a good pedigree work wise!!!

I did find someone who I would say was very functional and didn't give much advice on design and inspiration. I figured out most myself. But they did drawings promptly, dealt with Wandsworth planning and were responsive to all my stupid questions. My biggest learning is the architect drawings are just one part. Building engineer for structural drawings and specs, party wall surveyor and building inspectors. They are all needed.

Let me know if you need more info.
