Personally recommended tutors ?

Postby Bubs » Fri Mar 22, 2013 2:33 pm

Hello,
I'm considering a tutor for my daughter, age 7. She's doing well academically so initially this would be simply to get her into the habit of a structured 'homework' time. Maths is a strong point, and she reads very well (when she can be bothered / coerced). Writing could be a little tidier, again with concentration - but again she's doing fine.
She's a very able child who needs to learn the discipline of sitting down and applying herself, just very gently to get her into a good habit. Of course she wont listen to her parents (and we have a young baby so cant fully give the matter the attention it might deserve).
If anyone has a recommendation of someone who may fit the bill, stretching forward through juniors to CE time, it would be very much appreciated.
Best regards,
B x

Your daughter is only 7, let her be a child and play.
There is no benefit to homework at this age and if anything it can be counter productive. Schools that give a lot of homework at primary age tend to be insecure and suffer from bad teaching. A good teacher would rarely give homework at this age.
Encourage her to read and that will be enough.

Why anyone would employ a tutor to takeaway from a child's play is beyond me.

*sigh* I was rather expecting (though hoping it wouldn't happen) a reply like this.

To re-iterate, I am not intending to take anything away from her play. She has a plentiful amount of that, and attends a very relaxed school. She's entirely chilled out, and non-competitive, as are we for her.

I would simply like to add an element of structure, very slowly and gradually to prepare her. It's something I always used to do myself, just 30 mins a week, but with a rather *difficult* baby this is becoming increasingly tricky. Yet, I'd still like my eldest to benefit from such time.

I'm not chaining her to a table and making her recite Pi to 200 decimal places. It's not at all unusual to have achild of this age have a relaxed and gentle half hour of 1:1.

I was asking if anyone knew, or could personally recommend someone who might suit.

:? Unnecessary post Livegreen...
Bubs asked for a tutor recommendation. That 's all... No need to make assumptions and pass judgement about the school her daughter attends or about decisions she is making about how she chooses to 'parent'...

Could you get someone (nanny?) to look after the baby so that you can carry on doing it? That way it's still your relaxed, quiet time with her (and a lot cheaper than a tutor!).

Btw I wasn't making a judgement on tutoring but I do have a friend who's a teacher who has done tutoring in the past but really thinks that paying for a babysitter and doing the "tutoring" yourself is a better way. Give you a break from your baby as well!

I have tried that way (we have a nanny whilst Im at work so I've tried doing a bit when I get in). But honestly, and Im not proud of this, Im so frazzled from work & sleep deprivation I don't feel I have the patience to really get into the tricky stuff, and I don't want our relationship to suffer from me snapping at her unnecessarily.
Really though, the crux of it is that I feel she would listen & respond better to someone independent.
We do read together, and work through her minimal homework together & both enjoy that. But it's the getting to grips with the trickier stuff that I don't feel able to do (& she refuses to listen to me on !).

We have a 7 year old and have a fantastic tutor called Harriet who we found through Nightingale Tutors. She comes to us and does an hour a week and she is great. I felt the same as you that our daughter would respond better to someone independent and I had Nightingale recommended to me. If you are interested then I have dealt with Rebecca- her email is rebecca@nightingaletutors.co.uk or PM me, I am happy to recommend them!

Wonderful. Thank you so much, I shall contact them and see what they suggest.

Incidentally, I roped Daddy in to sit and do some maths this weekend, and it went well - so it must be just me she wont listen to !

Still keen to have something lined up for the coming terms though. Thank you !

Without any judgement on anyone who only wants the best for their child....

Harrison Allen are very good and can usually match the tutor to your needs and child. Google for their website.

I also do tutoring, but with someone that age it would be lots of fun and creative stuff and confidence building, encouragement to learn and so on
