Boots Optician on Balham High Road

Postby silviahm » Tue Jun 08, 2010 2:10 am

I have been a customer of this shop for years and years and years (probably about 14 or 15 years!) - I use their contact lenses by post service and every couple of years, due to my terrible eye sight I spend between £200-£400 on new glasses. My husband also shops there and when our eldest son needed glasses that is where we went.

Now you need to know that my son has various medical needs and he cannot speak, so getting his eyes tested isn't the easiest thing. He has always been looked after by Moorfields Eye Hospital and they gave us a voucher which we took to D&A and spent a little more for some nice new glasses. Guess what? He is 7 years old, and he has broken them. So off I trot back to the shop.

They tell me that his prescription is over 6 months old. I explain (although it is fairly obvious he can't speak!) that he cannot be tested by them and the hospital have tested him and his prescription hasn't changed. So I get told that it is "against the law" and they can't help. So I suggest calling the hospital for the prescription, I'm sorry Madam, we need it in writing. Can it be faxed? No Madam. I explained that this was very frustrating etc etc. Nope, it is against the law, it is against the law. Subsequently I realised that had they suggested choosing some frames and maybe then getting the prescription and dropping it off, that would have been a really helpful thing to suggest.

So, (sorry long saga), off we go. Now you also need to know that I have three children (the others are younger) so getting time to take just one child to the opticians as it just can't be done with 3, is quite a feat of organisation. Anyway, I get the prescription through the post. About two weeks go by and I realise that half term is a fab time to go, so off I trot again. By the time I have myself all organised with all his medical equipment, blue badge, wallet etc etc, I realise it is 20 past 5. I get there the shop has just shut and the chap in the shop gives me one of those "sorry but hahaha" grins that just makes my blood boil. I'm angry with myself for being late and for them for purposefully ignoring me. I didn't check my phone but I don't think it was 5.29, but I can't be sure.

Two days later I try again. This time I leave the house at 5.00 and actually have a nurse to help me. So I drop them off, whilst I park. They are practically not allowed in the shop (clearly the staff think it is too late to enter the shop) so when I come along, I'm like "we aren't here for an appointment, we just want some glasses" - so in we go - no help - we are totally ignored. I chose some glasses that have £40 written on the side and I go to the counter to order them with prescription etc. I take out £40 in cash from my wallet only to be told that they have cashed up and can I pay by card. It is 5.20, not even closing time yet. Then they ask me to complete a form for a voucher, and I say that I have already had one and I'm not sure I'm entitled to another, and the manager (who was the one who kept banging on about the law last time) came over to say that as they had not done the eye test they couldn't give the voucher. So the glasses aren't £40 actually they are £129. Of course, knowing they are going to get broken again, I think this is a little steep, so I ask if they have anything cheaper "well if you could come back tomorrow Madam" - it is not half past yet, but they were too lazy and too eager to get out of the door to serve me. What kind of customer service is that?  I thought that once in the shop, you should be served. And do bear in mind that we had chosen the frames in about 5 minutes - so it was obvious we weren't going to take too long about it! But no, come back tomorrow!

The manager clearly recognised me, she can't have not recognised my son - he has a tracheostomy and there aren't many children like that in Nappy Valley! Not even the obvious difficulties that we have made that stupid woman be helpful. What happened? D&A used to be so nice, and now I have to go to Tooting Broadway to get my glasses? I am so furious! Apologies for my rant, but if anyone else has had a bad experience since the change over, please let me know I wasn't being picked on!

That is both shocking and frustrating, I hope you've written a sternly worded letter to Sadiq beginning with "I am incandescent with rage...."

Hope tooting is better for you. ;)

You must definitely write a complaint letter to Boots Opticians about the terrible service you received including the name of that horrible person!

Thanks ladies!
Sometimes you think you're just being too sensitive, but certainly not this time. I have written to Boots head office - and guess what? No reply so far! Will keep you posted.

I think that is completely shocking!!! Poor you and your family having to go through that. I would bombard them all with emails, daily, and take it to the highest person I could find at Boots.

Appalling public service, which it doesnt even deserve to be called....

Unbelievabley bad service. They don't deserve your custom. Try Bellmores on Northcote Road, my son who wears glasses has had exemplory service from them for 11 years now. Couldn't recommend them more highly.

Hello everyone and thank you Nappy Valley!!!

Someone on this website read my post and reported it to the Manager of the London D&A/Boots Opticians who, after a lengthy search, managed to call me last week.

He was appalled at the story, appalled at the service and as a father himself understood part of the difficulty in just getting there. So, we have been offered two pairs of free glasses, one for me and one for my son as an enticement to give them a go again. He also informed me that there is a new manager there.

I will be going along soon, so I will let you all know how it goes.

Thank you, whoever it was that contacted the Regional Manager for me!

After such appalling treatment, I'm glad Boots have taken the trouble to contact you and offer a gesture, and that you've been gracious and accepted.

Good news that there's a new manager, hopefully they'll treat their customers with more respect. I need glasses myself, and was going to go there, but your story put me off. Perhaps I'll give them a go now ....

Olderandwiser, its funny you should mention Bellmores on Northcote Road!!! I always try to go
locally for everything and I have been their client for a few years now. But 2 weeks ago
I left and I will not be going back. The main optician (and owner I think) is absolutely lovely but
I could no longer stand the RUDE receptionists - and I have put up with their rudeness
for the past 2 years. And I think I am a polite and nice person !!!

I work 4 days a week and Friday is my day when (with kids in tow of course !!) I get all my
"chores"done. I will admit that my kids are so excited about spending the day with me
that they are often a bit "enthusiastic" .... and noisy ! The older lady at reception was SO
rude to me and horrible to the kids that I left in tears..... And all I was trying to do was make
an appointment for an eye test and pick up some contact lenses so I was there for about
5 minutes.... surely she can cope with noisy kids for 5 minutes ???!!!! Given that being in
nappy valley they probably get noisy kids quite a lot ....
They weren't touching anything just being a bit loud !!

If there is one thing I cannot stand is rudeness and bad service so despite the optician being
absolutely lovely and great at his job I will be going elsewhere...

Sorry - I also felt the need to have a rant about it !!!

What an awful experience, I'm glad that they contacted you and appologised.

I just wanted to recommend the Boots Opticians on Clapham Hight St. It is probably a bit of a trek for you, however, all of the staff are amazing and so wonderful with children.

They all fussed over and looked after my baby whilst I was in there recently and I couldn't recommend them enough. If you want to stay with Boots but still don't like the Balham one, then maybe this is an option for you.
