Ad hoc child care - what options are there round here? Post Reply

I'm looking to go back to work 4 days a week after maternity leave and will have a nanny for those 4 days. However I suspect I might sometimes have to work on my day off and of course the nanny may not be able to cover especially if he or she has another job on the 5th day.

I wondered what options there are to get childcare on an ad hoc basis, just for the odd day here or there, and probably at fairly short notice?

I know about the new place Baby Drop but they only take babies/children for 4 hours whereas I would probably need a full day.

I presume nanny agencies might be able to supply someone as an emergency nanny. but I'd have no idea who I'd be getting?

Are there any other nurseries or crèches or childminders out there which will take a child for the odd day?

Hi Pie81, we are in the process of getting permission from Ofsted so that we can offer full days on an ad hoc basis to our clients. This should be in place within the next 2 months and will offer a solution to many of our clients whose nannies are ill or who have last minute work commitments on their days off.

We have an "ad hoc nanny", in that we don't need her every week and have a flexible arrangement with her. We advertised for her on this basis, and so far it is working well. We agree a month or so in advance what days she will work for us in the following weeks, and only pay her for those days.

I used ********* and was surprised how many responses I got - I'd assumed that not many people would be interested in a zero hours contract, but for many reasons it turns out they are.

Long shot, here, but it might be worth checking at your or your OH's work. My work offer back up childcare. I get 10 days free and 10 days half pay. I use this when my childminder is closed or if i need to work on my day off. I suspect lots of people at my work aren't even aware that we offer this. It's a brilliant perk. I can use any Teddies.

Our team are consistent so even if you use us on an ad-hoc basis, your little one will recognise the staff faces, the other children who use the nursery on a regular basis as well as the familiarity of the Nursery itself.

The Deputy Prime Minsiter visited back in November last year and announced extended flexible working to everyone as well as shared parental leave from our Workhub.

We've just recently celebrated 3 years and have lots more services to launch in the pipeline as well as a second location.

I'm a mum of 3 little people so understand the pains of working parents so always thinking what we could do to make the lives of working parents easier!

Hello! We'd like to echo our founder's post! Our Nursery team is used to looking after children on an ad-hoc basis as well as our regular children. We'll make sure your little one has a great time with us whilst you work upstairs in the Workhub which we highly recommend!

If not, you can also leave your little one with us for the full day whilst you are at your office.

I have to second Annabel on Likeminders who have always been so helpful and had really good nannies ....Its also the benefit that the children are in your house so its less out of their comfort zone and if they have playgroups etc on that day the nanny could take them to it too...

Yes actually I think my work does offer emergency childcare now I think about it - but it's not free (I think they pay the membership fee but not the actual daily fee) and in many ways I'd prefer somewhere with regular carers who my child could get to know...

For my 'emergency care' i have always been able to use the same place (Streatham Teddies). They have never not been able to fit me in and i have used them probably over 25 times.

Oh and on the times when I have used my 10 days free days and I have moved to 50% rate, it's only been something quite small like £20.
