Hi there

I'm a first time mum and looking at going back to work soon. I'm looking for childcare from about 7am-5pm 5 days a week and wondering what kind of prices I should be looking for. What would a childminder charge vs a nanny share vs nursery? I am absolutely clueless but costs are a bit factor unfortunately.

I have an idea on nurseries but no idea re nanny share unfortunately. All help appreciated.

Legally for a good Nanny with experience £120 a day plus tax.

Nursery / childminders very but anything form 80 to 100 a day is about right.

I should revise to 60 to 100 a day for the nursery. Go visit with budget and see what they offer.

My childminder is £60 a day and she is starting a nursery which is also the same price (7.30-6.30) but the nursery is Tooting/Mitcham so cheaper location than most others in Clapham/Balham etc.

You should certainly consider Ofsted Registered Childminders!

I would charge £375 full time per week for 7am-5pm inclusive of everything

Your child would get to enjoy a huge range of activities and lots of socialising in a safe secure home from home environment with a good childminder

Looking o take my daughter to work with me too.

I'm not sure where you live but Elm Park is a great Montessori nursery which is cheaper than a lot of the others in clapham. I think they charge around £66 per day vs £90 for some of the ones BTC. They also have a huge garden which is a plus. Good luck, it's a mine field

Hi there

I am registering with Ofsted as a child-minder and live on Webbs Road SW11 and offering mostly part time care, I'm planning to charge £8 per hour if I ever have a full time child and I'm planning on accepting child care vouchers.

I've looked on the Wandsworth Council website and some fee's are as low as £5 per hour but then meals, nappies etc. are charged apart so you would need to ask potential childminders what they include in their fee. The highest I have seen for childminders in this area on the council website are £11 per hour and this is for part time care, as once a child occupies a place then another potentially full time child cannot have that place.

It also depends on what you want, a more homely atmosphere where children socialise in a small group or a larger setting. With childminding the bonus ( I see it as a bonus!) would be the child will have more one on one care and you can call/text the minder whenever you like whereas this wouldn't be the case with a nursery. Although this would also be true with a nanny share but childminders are now trained to aide the child's development with the EYFS framework through play, outings and activities.

The reason I am becoming a child-minder is that I for years struggled with childcare! So I understand how much of a big decision this is!

There are lots of great nannies in the area too and many parents on here seeking nanny shares so that would be a viable option too!

Thank you Lindy, that is very interesting and useful information. I was under the impression that childminders were less expensive than nurseries, shows I am fairly clueless about the whole thing. But thank you for coming back to me.

No problem at all, it is quite confusing....

Normally it will depend on where they live, some prefer to charge more for less children or some more children and charge less, modern child-minders with training and experience are childcare professionals and take in to consideration, the general cost of living where they are for example their rent/mortgage, wear and tear of their home, gas and electric charges for being at home all week with children and some offer organic home cooked meals etc. I am learning all about this on my course and from reading child-minding websites.

A great place for you to look for care would be www.********* where you can find someone really close to you and save yourself a lot of time travelling.
