Streatham Common... advice! Post Reply

I would say Streatham Village as I live here! Lovely cottage houses with white picket fences, the ABC roads or around the common. But everywhere has lovely spacious houses with Gardens! I have a massive garden, big enough for a trampoline, slides, swings and lots of trees can even fit a summer house in the bottom of my garden.

I must agree that Streatham High Road is not pleasant. That is mainly because it's a major route out of London and terribly busy, therefore I wouldn't like sit out on a cafe in the noise and fumes. But there are plans to pedestrianize some area around the Manor Arms Pub within the next year, which I'm looking forward to. There has been a lot of improvements all over Streatham in the last years. Also looking forward to the new leisure centre with pool and ice rink across the common.
We are in between Streatham and Streatham Common train station, Victorian Terrace tucked away from the busy roads. Still only 10 min walk to either stations and in the city or in Victoria in 15min. I love the character of the house, the fact the neighbours are a mix of families, youngsters, house shares etc. Also in terms of house prices, we could afford a huge house with garden 2 years ago and that which has increased in value by 170 - 190k according to different estate agents evaluation.

Agree that the High Road is not a very relaxing place...but otherwise am amazed by how undiscovered Streatham is. So much more choice of community schools than SW11 and really big houses and gardens given the connections into central London. It's an enormous area so I don't think there's really one Streatham 'brand' but even so...I wouldn't dismiss it! Particularly the Streatham Hill end where a bus can get you to Brixton very quickly for access to the Victoria Line.

We are also considering a move away from btc, either over to Tooting Bec, Graveney, Furzedown or Steatham Hill. However, we don't want to take the kids out of school.
Has anyone else moved further South but done the school / nursery commute in the mornings?

I have lived in Streatham for 15 years and there is a great community here!
My children go to a wonderful local state school and I honestly wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

I'm involved in lots of festival including Streatham Food Festival this weekend. There are some fab events going on and loads that suit families.

One particularly good family event will be 'The Good Food Day' on Saturday at Gracefield Gardens.
Lots of stalls, live music, face painting, food growing, craft workshops and more.
There will also be FREE workshops.
One that would be worth signing up for is from 10am–11am
"Organically Prepared Back to Eden" - an interactive children’s lunchbox session. How to involve kids in creating their own menus and healthy packed lunches.
It's completely free, but do sign up on the website to guarantee a space!

Like KatherineHepburn I would to be keen to hear from anyone who is currently doing a school run from SW16 to SW11... We will be moving to Streatham shortly and hoping to keep the children in their current school / nursery on Broomwood Road.

I grew up btc on wroughton rd and went to Honeywell sch. Bought a lovely house in Wakehurst rd but traded up to 3500sq ft with 80ft garden on wavertree rd (streatham hill). when I moved again I moved to Rydal rd (nr tooting lido) which is absolutely wonderful. Great community, street parties, quiet and again a massive house. Whilst I have the odd occasion to visit northcote rd I don't miss it. If people want to stay in a particular area that is fine but I wouldn't talk down another area if you don't really know it by actually living there for a period of time and can talk with authority... As the saying goes, don't knock it until you've tried it!

When I was a child northcote rd and Clapham junction were far from known as posh.

I've spent more of my life living btc than Streatham but love Streatham. Open spaces, diverse communities, excellent transport links, great schools, huge houses, rich history (contact Streatham society) means its foundations are based on where the gentry chose to live and much evidence of this is seen everywhere. With the growing influx of those wanting to up size from the likes of northcote rd it won't be long before house prices in Streatham becomes a financial challenge for them. So watch out those who turn their nose up.

That aside, Once anyone makes a change to Streatham you will find really lovely people and communities like everywhere else and some of the usual dubious types but hey this is London!

Any recommendations on Nurseries and "Outstanding" schools in the area ???

Also, are there any private schools worth a mention in Streatham ?

For private schools, there is a branch of Broomwood Hall on Garrads Lane or for girls there is Streatham and Clapham High. Plus all the Dulwich schools are fairly close by car.

We are very happy with streatham and clapham high but obv it's just for girls. Dulwich college/prep and oak field prep and Rosemead (?) are v close by.
Streatham mums network on Facebook is INvaluable for all local info and meeting new people. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. X

Regarding nurseries, Cavendish Lodge on Lewin Road is wonderful!!! Ofstead Outstanding.
