Foxes - Enough is enough Post Reply

We have a fox den up the back of the house in front of us and so every evening we see at least 4-5 trekking around the street. They love our recycle bags and rubbish bags so we have bought extra bins to ensure we don't open our door to the contents of our bin strewn down the street BUT last night I heard the milk bottles knock over at about 4am so looked out of the window. They had rolled both bottles down the front path, pierced the foil and were lapping up the contents. Once the bottle had stopped pouring milk out one of the foxes picked it up in his teeth and tipped it so he could drink it! They were totally unafraid of our security light or me banging on the window.

Is the council dealing with these foxes? Ultimately they are vermin and wreaking havoc whilst we are all in bed. Are they being culled? They are so brazen and smart judging by swigging from our milk bottle, that I do wonder what they will do next - sneak in through an open window/door...

Apparently we have no moral right to do anything to them.

By that rationale we should put mice and rats under protection.

Total agreement with OP. Anyone have any ideas on how to keep them away? I have them pooping in the back garden every night! they are driving me mad.

I don't think the council will do anything, it's up to the individual 'land owner'. We took matters into our own hands and had pest control round, they laid baited traps, we caught one but that was all - they come and take the fox away and destroy it. That said, if you're doing something to stop them and next door is feeding them, you're up against a lost battle....
It's obviously at your own expense that way too, our builders set traps for them too as they were messing all over their tools each night. It was lucky for us that our builder's father was in pest control and laid the trap for free!

Awful to hear that they're attacking your milk now too.

Foxes in our garden are now less common, but we've tidied it up and cut back a lot of the undergrowth making it very un-fox friendly! You can buy clear spikes for the fences too.

There's been heaps posted on here before about foxes and ways to deter them.

I agree though, the council should do something to stop them but in an ever increasingly populous city, it's very hard!

Hi,

sorry to hear your having trouble with foxes. We had foxes in our garden about two years ago and used a company called Foxagon to help us deter them. The foxes still haven't been back.

The company basically blocked off all access to our decking using wire mesh (having ensured there were no foxes trapped under there). They also blocked any holes under fences to make it more difficult for them to come into the garden. They used a scent marking preparation around the perimeter to persuade the foxes that our garden is not their territory.

We have topped this up from time to time with "Scoot fox repellent" which you can buy from Amazon or from Robert Dyas. We also make sure that we use our garden as much as possible all year.

As I understand it, foxes are not legally classed as vermin and never have been and they are protected by wildlife laws, so the council can't really do anything.

I think the biggest problem for you is that the den is in your neighbour's garden, not yours...

We have them too. They wrecked our garden and broke many plant holders. Try to enter our cat flap nightky and we caught one climbing though our bedroom window. We are kept awak every night with their screeching and often awake to evidence of them opening neighbors bin bags. Our two cats are now so nervous and we get no sleep. It',s getting worse week by week. he council really should do something
