As a local resident, I’m dumbstruck that TFL are planning on putting a busy new bus route (255) through this area (one every 12-minutes in both directions!), including the narrow roads where Telferscot School and Asquith are situated. Not only am I concerned about the extra traffic/parking/noise/disruption, but the safety issues of bringing buses down these small residential roads.

I appreciate that some of you may want this bus (although it certainly won't get us into Balham faster!), but for those of you who are as worried as I am, please voice your concerns at https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/buses/ ... route-255/.

What alternative route can be suggested? Thornton Road instead of Radbourne?

I don't see a problem with buses going down Weir Road or Devonshire Rd - they are both big enough

I think it' s a good idea.

The area is very poorly served by buses and there is a high percentage of elderly living in the area who would benefit from the service.

I also believe its a good idea for the local area. Between Balham and Streatham Hill there is a a bit of lack of transport, so it's great we have this new bus route.

I suppose all the NIMBYS will be voicing their complaints against on the TFL consultation, so if you're for the new bus route, please consider taking a few minutes to voice FOR the new bus route!

Thank you for your posts, ladies, and for taking the time to reply. But to clarify, it's not that I'm against the actual bus route, but the particular route it's taking.

Radbourne Road is a narrow residential road which goes past a busy (growing) primary school and nursery. This road is already heavily congested and the bus will also have to go over a crossroad (Hydethorpe Road).

As I said in my earlier post, it's the safety aspect that's my concern. I understand that there's a need for the bus, but I don't understand why it doesn't go down a safer, more practical route. One of the other ladies who posted suggests Thornton Road which is a good idea - it's significantly wider and better equipped for buses (it has a roundabout so no crossroad to contend with).

As a local mum, I just want to be able to walk my children to nursery/school/the common safely, that's all. Many Hyde Farm mums I've spoken to whose children go the school/nursery weren't aware of the bus route - and it affects them too - so I just wanted to flag up the plans so everyone who was concerned so they can voice their concerns if they choose to.

Will it also increase pollution outside the school? (not sure how polluting modern buses are)

Extending the bus route does make sense - the Weir Estate on Weir Road has a high number of elderly and disabled residents who would definitely benefit.

The issue is its route down Radbourne Road - this makes no sense at all. As dailymail says, the road is just too narrow - the section between Hydethorpe and Weir Road especially. With a number of schools and nurseries in close proximity, parked residents cars, school children, I can't help thinking that adding frequent buses to this mix (in addition to the traffic that already uses Radbourne as a cut-through route between Weir Road and Streatham Hill) is an accident waiting to happen. The properties are all close to the road too so the extra noise will certainly be noticeable - especially if the service runs after midnight as planned.

Thornton Road is the obvious and more direct route - it's wider, the houses are set further back from the road, and it already has traffic calming speed bumps in place. Nobody I've spoken to on Radbourne thinks they'd use the service anyway.

dailymail - Not sure if you're aware there's a petition in the Anish Stores shop on the corner of Radbourne and Weir road against this chosen route - it has around 100 signatures which is quite interesting. Hopefully TFL will have a rethink.
