Looking for Accountant familiar with US Taxes

Hi there,

My husband and I (both American) are looking for an accountant to complete our UK taxes for the most recent tax year. We already have completed our American taxes, and we'll need the accountant to be familiar with US taxes as our US tax return will play into how our UK taxes are calculated.

Actually I think I might have different idea about this. Why not contact an accountant in the US and have all your taxes done by them locally? There is nothing in the Tax law that requires you to use a "local" accountant and I know the local accoutants that specialize in US taxes are VERY expensive. Also some new rule changes for next year will mean that you will have a much harder time finding someone here in the UK to do it (many are going to stop US tax services) and the prices will go even higher.
It's really too bad the US embassy doesn't offer this service for US citizens. One would think this should fall right into their responsibilities.

I agree with Romick. I have slightly complicated US taxes looked into this a few years ago. I was told by a number of tax experts (including E&Y and others here) that it made a lot of sense and would be a lot cheaper to have a US accountant for the US side and, if your UK taxes are complicated, a UK person as well. It's fairly likely that you'll need only the US person, but if you do need both make sure that they are happy to talk with each other if need be and will agree to be sensible and efficient about it all. I have had my US taxes done for over ten years by Paul Horvarth who is a CPA outside of NY city. My mum is a tax lawyer and has thought him sensible and reasonable, for what that is worth.
