Postby Allsmiles » Sun Nov 24, 2013 11:24 pm

Hi,

My ds is suffering from sever silent reflux and currently on medication to help with the pain. But I have read of lots of positive stories about alternative methods to help to relieve pains. Anyone can recommend any?

Many thanks

Also tried Adam at Neal's Yard, and the very lovely Eglantine at Physio 4 All on Webbs Road (aka 'The Magic Lady' in our house).

We took my daughter to Northcote Chiropractic on Webbs Rd. Ask for Pip or Emma - they both have experience with reflux babies and are amazing. Good luck!

Thanks ladies.

Were your lo's ailments (was it reflux?) cured / improved as a result of the treatment?

Thx

Ours was just eased. My daughter's was linked to allergies in the end (much reflux is / can be so we've learned).
Definitely made my daughter much more comfortable though.

Another vote for Emma and Pip at Northcote Chiropractic.

Before becoming a nanny I worked at a specialist paediatric chiropractic clinic (not in London unfortunately). We found that Chiropractic really helped with a whole array of ailments, and once miserable babies would come back all smiles!

We found that allergies and intolerances also played a massive part, and always advised the mums to seek expert nutritional advice to put into place alongside treatment.

I can only speak from a chiropractic background, but I've heard that osteopathy can also work wonders.

Good luck :)

Yes it was for reflux treatment. Not a complete cure though I would say "all but gone" in combination with her med (Ranitidine). It certainly helped her sleep better and generally eased her discomfort. I find now that she's teething, the reflux has started again but is less troublesome then before her treatments. Her chiropractic sessions with Emma included some cranial osteopathy.

Bubs, how did you go about getting the allergy tests? That is probably our next step but I'm sure where/how to get it done. Is it something our GP can refer us for?

Thx uncker1. My Lo is on omaprazole and I too have been looking at osteopath as a treatment. So is Emma registered on the osteopathic list? Thx

Ours was via a GP referral to a gastro paed, and then subsequently to an allergist / immunologist. We had an endoscopy, colonoscopy, skin prick tests and various bloods. Then dietary measures.

It's worth noting that standard allergy tests quite often wont pick up the problem, as they only detect ige allergies. The gastro ones, and ones connected to reflux are non-ige or delayed allergies, so somewhere in the gut. The main offenders are dairy, soya, egg and wheat.

Unlike with ige allergies which can tell you exactly what the offender is via skin pricks, non-ige allergies is all a big guessing game of elimination and reintroduction. It should never be confused with an intolerance either, it is an allergic reaction - just a non-ige one.

Very helpful thank you Bubs.

Allsmiles, Emma & Pip are chiropractors with specialised paediatric training which I believe includes some cranial osteopathy. We had already tried an osteopath prior to the chiro treatments. The effectiveness of different treatments varies greatly, similarly with the meds. We found omeprazole didn't suit our LO. Hope you find the right combination soon.

There is a specialist children's chiropractic in wandsworth http://occ.uk.com/get-in-touch/where-to-find-us/

Can't comment on effectiveness for reflux as we didn't try it.

Omeprazole is amazing though. It takes a few weeks to work but then it completely turns off acid production so it is impossible to have 'acid reflux' while taking it. Of course they can still have reflux I.e. being sick a lot, but without the acid there is no pain.

Hope it gets better soon.

Thanks everyone

Ready2pop - did you have to adjust the dose your lo is on? My LO is on 5mg a day and we saw a dramatic improvement, but it was short lived. Going to see paed again to see if dose needs up'ing.

My son wasn't quite 3 months old when we were sent to a paeds gastro specialist and his initial dose was 10mg which was upped to 20mg a month later.

So either your LO is on quite a low dose or we had the most gung-ho paed ever (which actually may well be possible :) )
