Book series for six years old

Postby monaco » Thu Nov 28, 2013 11:10 am

Hi

my husband made the very valid point that to help our daugther get into longer books with chapters, it would be good if we found a character that she'd want to read about again and again.

So what book series for a six years old girl would you recommend ?

Thank you

You could try some of the Enid Blyton ? My daughter is a bit older but I think when she was 6 years old she enjoyed Amelia Jane which is probably the slightly easier series, and then move on to the Naughtiest Girl and the Faraway Tree. My daughter loved all of them !

Or a lot of the girls also seem to love the Rainbow Fairies collections ? For some reason my daughter was never hugely into it but I know a lot of girls are !

Try also Pippi Longstockings which has illustrations by the same lady who does Charlie and Lola,

Not sure how what level of book you're looking for but "Daisy and the trouble with..." books are fun, still have some pictures and, as they're not too sophisticated, help encourage reading longer books without it being painful. They are also an intro to sarcasm and irony... In my opinion, a good staging post on the way to proper Enid Blyton etc. Much better than the hideously gender-stereotyped rainbow fairy magic drivel.

Sorry my opinion Laura - but I could not care less if the books are "hideously gender-stereotyped" as long as it gets my kids reading!! So if your girl is into Fairies - then give these a go !

Fair enough, just giving some info for what it's worth... If I could encourage my daughter to read something that isn't a load of rubbish and reinforcing annoying gender stereotypes, personally, I'd want to do that.

Actually, it's not just the fairy subject material that is the main issue - they are badly written, the girl characters are insipid and the storylines are uninspiring and ridiculously formulaic so I don't think a child gains much at all from reading more than one of them... Interesting that your daughter didn't like them herself - a sign of the discerning reader!

My 6 year old boy loves the Enid Blyton "Magic Faraway Tree" series and the shorter Roald Dahl's but his absolute favourites are the Mr Gum stories - they have him almost crying with laughter and he sloped off to his room daily to read them.

Yay to a female heroine in Mr Gum! They look fun - I will definitely check out for my daughter...

I reckon this could be a very useful thread, keep em coming...

This is already hugely helpful. I agree that good writing and good characterisation will help a lot.

Many thanks to all, do keep the suggestions coming.

I just wanted to add to this thread...

My daughter has just discovered "Geronimo Stilton". She is obsessed with these books !!! She has literally devoured 5 of them in the last 2 weeks. Just thought I would add as they are definitely not "gender-stereotyped" !

She has borrowed them from the school library so makes me thing they can't be too bad !
