Children's birthday cakes

Postby busyMouse » Fri Sep 17, 2010 2:28 pm

I've been looking for a place to get children's birthday cakes but so far haven't found anything. Some of the ones you see at Sainsbury's or Waitrose are quite cute but I'd love to find something a bit more special and home-made-tasting (and that didn't have a use by date of three months away). I wish I had the time to make one myself but I just don't unfortunately!
A friend of mine in the US has recently started her own business making beautiful and personalizeable (if that's a word) children's birthday cakes and event cakes but I haven't found anything like that here (in the Clapham area)
Does anyone have any leads?

Try Bon Bon, which is at the back of Happy Faces hairdresser on Webb's rd. I went in a few weeks ago to enquire about cakes and they can pretty much do anything with a couple of days' notice. They were really helpful and they have books for cakes for you to look at to help you decide what you want.

I'm not a professional but have made some pretty fun/exciting cakes over the years first as a stepmum (Barbie, underwater, princess, flowered, Halloween/jack o'lantern and cheeseburger/chips to name a few) and more recently as a mum to my own son (Snowman, Thomas, Gruffalo). I grew up in the States so am used to the idea of doing something a bit unusual and also not just relying upon rolled icing (I know my way around various frostings and icing tubes).

I'd be happy to send you some photos if you like and we could discuss a price...? I'm in SW20. Please send me a message if interested!

Hi Busy Mouse,

I just made 50 (!) cupcakes for a friend's birthday and used this website for ideas:

http://familyfun.go.com/recipes/cakes-c ... upcakes/2/

They were a lot easier than I thought they would be and went down a storm (the polar bear one was everyone's favourite and the monster ones were the most fun to make!!). You can cheat and get get one of those moulds worth 25 cupcakes so I wouldn't have to spend the whole day icing. I'd say you'd need about an hour to do it.

Or failing that, you could splash out on a Jane Asher cake:

Good Luck!!

Hi

I am a Local Mum [SW11 1BJ] who also has a Cake Hobby. I used to make cakes for Crumpet and I enjoy making exciting creations for school raffles and birthdays etc. Would very much enjoy making anything you fancy. I can send you photos of my work too. Something that looks great but tastes just as good as it looks is a priority! Message me if you want to chat.

Try a friend of mine, Gemma Saffhill, who has recently set up a business in Balham making cakes. She does special ones to order and also has a stall at various of the markets in the area. She did a wonderful "under the sea" themed cake for a big joint birthday party we had for my son and his nct gang - all blue and green waves, rocks and seaweed with fish and starfish and lobsters etc, they loved it - and so did the adults because it was so tasty! Then she also did a more adult cake for another occasion too - a delicious ginger and lemon drizzle cake, yum. Her whole premise is about using the freshest ingredients, organic wherever possible and absolutely nothing to give it an extended 'shelf life'. And you can really taste the difference believe me. I can't imagine getting a cake from anyone else again! Her no is 07760 283653 or Gemma.Saffhill@rpsgroup.com

I have a good friend who is in the process of setting up her own cake making business.... she did the cupcakes for my baby shower (very yummy) and have asked her to make my son's first birthday cake so we are going through different ideas at the moment! Am sure she would love to help you out, I can send you her details if you would like. x

Wow, thanks for all the great replies! SO helpful. I'm going to check out Bon Bon first as they're so close to where we live and if that doesn't work out then I'll start checking out these other options.
Thanks again!

I can highly recommend a local mum called Tarina Reeves who makes great children's cakes - you can call her on 07789 658703.

You seem to have had loads of suggestions - but as I am round the corner from you I thought I'd join in any way. I make cakes for Bertie and Boo Cafe in Balham and have done endless birthday cakes for my children over the years, now 18 and 15. So do get in touch if I can help.

Perhaps I'm going crazy but I can't seem to find Bon Bon anywhere. I've been calling them for days but the phone number just doesn't connect and finally today I walked along Webb's Road looking for them. I found Happy Faces no problem but didn't see any sign of Bon Bon.
hjm did you say you were there just a few weeks ago? Are they behind Happy Faces on Webb's or Bramfield?
So in typical fashion I've left things till the last minute, hopefully I'll get something sorted out before my daughter's birthday party on Saturday!
Just as well I have several other leads to go on - thanks again everyone!

Those Jane Asher cakes look amazing by the way but a few hundred pounds for a birthday cake is just a little more than I wanted to spend!!

BonBon has closed down sadley :o i found out today when i took the children to Happy Faces for haircuts. My wife used to buy cupcakes from them every saturday for tea. The most amazing cupcakes, Nuttela one was by far the best.

But seems like there was not much local support so BonBon closed down. The boys are so sad as we would take them there every friday for a treat.

I think we should all support local business as that is what makes our "nappyvalley" different right? I would hate the local area to be full of chains.

Starbucks has thousands of stores so drink your coffee at Couleur Cafe on webbs road i love it there, Quite in the day so i can read the paper.
