I would also recommend David Simmons on Garratt Lane (on the crossroads with Penwith Road & Earlsfield Road). They are professional, polite and do a good job on repairs.

I am going to defend Asquiths and say that I have only ever had good service from them. Sounds like I might be in the minority though!

I agree with regard to Hi Q on Chatham Road. The guys there are so lovely. Once I went to see if I needed a new tyre. They checked it for me while I waited and said I didn't. Another time I went to have a tyre changed that was completely flat. They changed it while I waited and also noticed that I had a Phil & Ted's pram wheel on my front seat which I was going to Halfords to get fixed. He asked if I wanted it repaired, did the repair there and then and wouldn't take any money for it. That's good service for you.

I took a watch to Asquiths that I'd bought my husband as a wedding present & the engraving was dreadful, thankfully it's on the side so not that noticeable but I have never been back. They weren't bothered at all when I said that they hadn't done a good job, just said it was hard to engrave!

I've used F Hinds for other things & they are v.helpful.

I had a similar experience with Suzelle's cakes in Southfields, I paid 3 figures for a Thomas the Tank engine birthday cake, despite having my son's name written in front of them, they mis spelt his name, rushed the redo so it looked dreadful & when I complained and insited that they re do it again, they made a right fuss and after all that it wasn't even a Thomas cake, my son pointed out that it had a number 2 on it so it was Edward not Thomas. The cake didn't even taste that nice so I won't be going back.

Last week I went in there and asked about engraving - when I said could it be ready by Saturday (it was Wednesday!) he looked at me like I was MAD..... I got a very short NO and are you stupid kind of look .............. and have still not got the item engraved but will now go to the place in Earlsfield - do they definitely do engraving?

I am so sick of the few NVN users who feel it appropriate to bad mouth all these local business - Bird House Café one thing but Asquiths - really? This is an institution and the grumpy sometimes erratic service is frankly part of the charm - I grew up in SW11, shopped in QT toys as a child, collected things with my Mum from Asquiths and quite frankly these are two of the only shops that remain from my childhood memory -PLEASE GET OVER YOURSELVES and accept local business (especially those who have been here for a long time) as they are

Brilliant post katskii. You're absolutely right-all these people moaning about small businesses yet they complain the minute an estate agent only. I agree small businesses should offer brilliant customer service as should the large companies. But give then a break! They've been there for years. For the record I think they are brilliant. As are hennessys as are so many of these shops on northcote road.

Well said. They are a bit more old school but I wouldn't want them gone even if they haven't been to charm school. I popped in Tuesday to get a bracelet shortened for my mum. They did it there and then, took ten mins and charged me £5. The left over links and pearl they added a loop and said it could work on a necklace chain. We didn't exchange many pleasantries but it was professional and provided a good service. I was a happy customer.

Have to say that my (many) experiences with Asquiths have been all good. But I think these type of posts goes to show the different observations/interpretations/expectations we have. If in doubt judge for yourself. Works every time, otherwise you end up being a sheep being led to the next trendy place after another.

Ten years ago we got my wedding ring from Asquith's. I had used it for at least one other jewellery repair and the work was fine but the service was not brilliant. Then when I was in the shop collecting my ring, their little white Scottie dog went crazy when he saw a black labrador outside. The older proprietor chuckled and said (not to me) 'He doesn't like black...dogs'. I haven't been back to that local shop.
