I have the coil with no hormons. It wasn't painful to fit it but after I had a very painful period. It was so painful, I had to have a scan if it fits well. But it was a side effect of having coil. After 4 months all settled in and no more pain, period regular. So maybe it's good to try the coil with no hormons.

Have had it for 3 years now with no side effects, cramping, bleeding etc.
Was a bit sore to fit - a bit like a smear test, I'd say but other than that it's been great for me. Have had friends with different experiences though.

I am on my second coil. First one removed last year.
I love it. No periods and i hadn't really notices any moodiness.
The last one was a bit fiddly to remove (strings too short) but only uncomfortable like having a smear. I would highly recommend it.

I agree that they can be great for some ladies and awful for others! Other than mood effects, a number of the ladies I ave treated (I am a women's health physio) have struggled with urge urinary incontinence while using it. The progesterone can really irritate bladder wall sensors that send messages to your brain saying you need to wee!
So if you have the mirena and suddenly are almost wetting yourself as you go to unlock your front door - get it removed!

I don't want to freak anyone out, but my coil ended up in my stomach cavity. All is fine now, and I actually have another one, but I would advise that you go to the 6 week check, I didn't until much later as I was overseas for 2 months and when I returned there was a 6 week wait to have the check.
If you have a baby under 6 mths and are breastfeeding, chances of coil perforating uterus are higher, think it's 1/1000.

I ended up going for the check, she couldn't find it, going for scan, they couldn't find it and then having an xray where they found it. Hysteroscopy followed (operation), 1 week off work. I would be weary of going back to my GP on this instead would favour focused unit or private where they scan at the time confirming correct placement.

I also had the coil with no hormones a few years ago, putting it in was a bit painful but extremely quick, the periods were more painful for a couple of months but settled. They were heavier than before but I still found it a good form of contraception which I would highly recommend (right now having small kids seems to be a great contraceptive given that we are both so tired )
