A user has been in touch and asked me to share the following ...

'My 18 year old was fined on his way home from school on the common for dropping a receipt.  The ‘stalker Environmental Officer’ jumped out and had obviously been following and waiting for something to happen!  The fine was £150 – totally disproportionate to the ‘crime’.  It’s outrageous that Wandsworth Council had introduced these fines – just a money making operation as far as I am concerned.  Please warn people.  Obviously littering is wrong but a £25 fine would be about right!!!'

Goodness, that seems way too harsh - surely the officer must have seen that it was dropped accidentally and not on purpose??! I have to say seems all a bit police state to me.

If only they could apply this tactic to dog owners that don’t pick up after their dog......

If only the 'authorities' could be as 'effective' with their resources in stopping muggings/knife crimes.

I think that throwing litter is such an awful thing to do and that it’s great news to hear the authorities are doing something about it!

I live in a road with a school. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if these officers could be outside of the school and ticket people there. When school’s on holiday there is little or no rubbish in my garden but when school is in there is loads. Also, can they please target those builders / taxi drivers / white-van workers who leave bottles of yellow liquid,
aka their pee, in bottles on the side of the road. As for your poor son I don’t think that the fine is proportionate for a child but at 18 he unfortunately is officially an adult. I do think that should however be some discretion for accidental events.

My daughters best friend, also 18, had the same fine last week for dropping an Apple core on the common! Yes. An Apple core on the common. She offered to pick it up but was told no, there was no point. Leave it there and pay the fine!

I, like others are pleased they are taking littering seriously but really?? Perhaps the council is trying to raise revenue to put towards addressing knife crime?

Agree entirely and the same goes for the footballers who leave their empty water bottles strewn all over the common every weekend.

Okay the fine is way too steep, but something needs to be done about the dreadful littering on the common. Hopefully this will make a difference.
