Anyone feeling worried about post birth loneliness?

Postby aperrin » Fri Mar 05, 2021 7:39 pm

Hello! I have just joined this site but have already read a lot of reassuring posts and messages from expectant mums who are either worrying about giving birth or not having a network of local friends, which I can imagine all new mum’s rely on! I moved to Tooting a year or so ago now and don’t have many local friends. To say that finding out I was pregnant was a shock is an understatement, as for a long time my husband and I didn’t think we could have children 😳 Im now due late April with a baby boy! I appreciate we’re slowly coming out of lockdown but if anyone local to Tooting or Clapham/Battersea fancies meeting for a park walk and a take away coffee, please do let me know, as I’d love to meet you!  Amanda x

Hi Amanda.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

When I was pregnant I joined apps such as Mush and Peanut to make new mum friends in the local area. They are fantastic for meeting new people and fast forward almost 4 years and some of the mums I met on the apps are now my closest friends!
I’m living in the countryside now, but will be moving back to London this summer (with my son and 3month old) so may bump into you then :)

Congrats on your pregnancy! Feeling worried and even anxious is normal! Covid will end someday and everything's gonna be fine!

Hi met lots of lovely mums by going to classes. The happity website has them all listed.
Hartbeeps and MonkeyMusoc were our favourites.
NCt runs a walk and talk which is free on a few of the commons. Hopefully this will be running again now Covid is easing

I can recommend going to the NCT pre-natal classes before the birth just to build up a small support network for the early weeks and months post birth (and the anxious days before!).  At 3am when you are at your wits end, these are the people who will be be going through the exact same experience as you and I found it to be invaluable support.

Also, as someone previously mentioned, classes such as monkey music are excellent for meeting other mums.  I think you can start these from 3 months.

Hey!

Get on the app Peanut! I’ve met several new friends (after moving to the area only last summer) who I talk and meet with regularly now. It can be awkward at first cause it feels like dating - but trust me- you’ll find mums who are also due/ just had a baby/ or want some new mum friends.

I found it impossible to meet mums at monkey music or anything that meets weekly, it’s just a whirlwind getting in and out of those venues!

Hope you feel better :)
