Can anyone recommend an IT guru who can come to my house and sort out varying issues with wifi boosters and sonos?

Postby BeanBag27 » Mon Dec 12, 2022 8:24 am

Morning all - I am in desperate need of an IT guru who could come to my home near Clapham Junction and help sort out issues that have arisen since moving from Virgin to Sky.   None of the Sonos will link up despite doing everything suggested, and I don't think the Deco wifi booster things are connecting to the new Wifi and I would love someone who is a guru in these kind of things to come around and sort it all out asap as I have given up!

TIA

There used to be a student chap called TobyTech who did exactly this.

He now has a “proper” job but he may be around for xmas - I’ll ask him

First off are you using a wired or wireless network? I.E. is everything plugged in with Ethernet or not?

If it is *wired*

If you are using a wired network this is almost certainly because the router IP address has changed from say 192.168.0.1 to 182.168.1.1 or something similar. Usually simply power cycling the Sonos will solve this.

If it is *wireless*

Method one

With Sonos the best thing to do is to plug one single unit directly in with an Ethernet cable directly to the router and obvs main power. You should then be able to update the wi-fi credentials

Settings -> system -> system settings -> network -> wireless setup

If the Sonos boxes are within range of each other they can chat amongst themselves and propagate the new credentials.

Method 2

The other way of achieving this is to change the network name and password on the router to the old network name and password. This is usually the easiest way.

However, this may not work if devices are checking the MAC address of the router to prevent spoofing or if you have set MAC + IP to BIND to increase network security.

General observation

We have this problem constantly with clients who rent out houses and don’t rent it out with the broadband. The renter then changes the router and nothing works…..again and again and again……it is even worse with smart homes where everything is chatting to the network and everything needs new network credentials!

Really installers should ask if you want to map your old network credentials over - provided they are secure.

Please update us and let us know how you get on!

I used Toby Tech, to whom IT Guru refers, on a few occasions.  He was absolutely wonderful, so much so that he then got snapped up by an IT company, abroad from what I remember.

I've been helping people with their IT in SW London for over 20 years, I live by Battersea Park.

Please feel free to contact me to discuss.
