Sound proofing or second glazing for windows? Post Reply

Hello,
I am looking to reduce traffic noise in my bedroom, living in an ex-local authority flat with double glazed uPVC windows. 
Please let me know if you have found a suitable solution, I was thinking second glazing for example, or any other way to reduce considerably traffic noise. Also looking for supplier and installer recommendation.

Hi there,

I have posted on this previously, but the best way to reduce street noise is to install secondary glazing as you have suggested.  Double glazing is good for temperature insulation but not that great for sound, as sound needs as big a gap as possible between the panes.  I can't help you with a supplier unfortunately, but at least you are heading in the right direction...

I’ve recently come across a product called Fineo glazing that is *supposed* to be great for houses on busy roads, but I’ve read it’s expensive and the hope is the price will come down over time

I have received a few quotes for 6.4mm Acoustic Laminated Safety Glass and 4mm clear toughened glass.
There is some difference in terms of cost, although the contractor mentions that the noise reduction is almost similar.
@Wandsworth_New_Mum: would you know by any chance the kind of secondary glass you have?

I remember viewing a property with triple glazing and being greatly impressed at how well they reduced the noise: on the first floor overlooking a busy road, traffic noise was practically nothing.
