Free local author Storytime: Wandsworth library tour for Pride Month!!

Postby Kirstin_Author » Mon Jun 05, 2023 9:48 am

As a local author of inclusive children’s books and avid LGBTQI ally, I’ll be touring many of our amazing libraries throughout pride month.

Come to my free story time sessions including sing-a-long of some classic kids songs and be one of the first to hear my new book “Daddy’s Scared of Beasties”

Current dates are:

12th June @4pm: Battersea Library
16th June @9:30am: Southfields Library
16th June @11:00am: Roehampton Library
30th June @10:00am: Tooting Library
30th June @4pm: Wandsworth town Library

See you there!

Can I ask a few questions please :

What exactly are you saying to children in these books, being an ‘avid LGBTQ aly’ ?

Are you dressed up ?

What’s your motivation behind writing these books and promoting them to children ?

I would not take my children anywhere near these events and it’s time parents spoke out vocally against this if it happens in your school. They still believe in Father Christmas and the tooth fairy, let them grow up without all this.

@readysteadycook give it a rest. You're basically searching for anything vaguely LGBTQ+ related and attacking people at this point. Nobody is asking, much less forcing, you or your kids to attend these events, or any others. You have talked a lot about the importance of free speech and being able to say what you think about these issues. Take your own advice and stop bullying people for offering completely voluntary activities and events that you personally don't want to attend.

ReadySteadyCook - a very simple search on google would tell you that the book in question sounds really sweet and inoffensive - a story about a Dad trying to not be afraid of mini-beasts in front of his children. The same google search would also allow you to see a picture of the author. The fact that the book might be inclusive, that it might depict a mixed race couple or an LGBTQ+ couple is hardly something that necessitates boycotts or outrage. Neither does the fact that the author chooses to be an ally. I doubt very much that you would be posting similar things or asking some incredibly rude questions if any other minority group was being represented here.

Thank you for your support and I absolutely agree. This forum is for supporting our local community, not tearing it down. You’re welcome to ignore posts that aren’t relevant to you. I had over 40 people turn up to my last library visit and it was a joyful welcoming place.

Thank you for your brilliant support. It’s nice to see that some people actually do inform themselves before posting. I have had many families praise my books for showing different family settings and have based all my stories on real people.
As you can see it is possible to depict an LGBT+ family in an age appropriate way, just like countless books do when they include a heterosexual couple.

Thanks again, it’s people like you who make this community stronger.

Oh my god!
readysteadycook and Danishmum3 - who hurt you?
This is an author sharing her work in the community.
None of your comments add ANY value at this point.
You made your views clear on the other thread, so give it a rest, please.

Hello! I run Little Box of Books, an inclusive children's book organisation and thought I'd reply to your comment with hopefully information that will help. Kirstin's books champion diversity and by this I mean, help children to see that people and therefore families all look different from each other. By reading stories to children that feature this family diversity we teach them from a young age that there's no such thing as 'normal'. This helps children who live in foster care or with two dads, two mums, step parents, single parents to feel seen and validated, and see that they are worthy of being the main character in a story. It also helps children who maybe live in a family with two heterosexual parents to understand other families and broaden their world view, helping them to deal with difference with kindness and compassion..
These books also show children that it is safe for them to be themselves as they grow up...
Universally we want what's best for our kids. While the media discussions on some of these topics can be impenetrable, you're in v safe hands with kirstin's books and events

Perhaps you would be happier in a UKIP voting post code?

This is a tolerant area and all the better for it.

You just appear to be not a very nice person.

I am a nice person..as I said in another post I i think children innocence should be protected ..it is not appropriate for them to hear stories about lgbt..I do think children should come first then lgbt agenda..it is not about being a nice person or not.
