WHICH DRAMA SCHOOL: Lets act vs Perform

Postby maria_ben » Tue Sep 26, 2023 9:53 pm

Hi all

I am looking to trial drama classes for my nearly 4yo son in Earlsfield. Any feedback on experiences with Lets Act or Perform?  Many thanks!

I have experience with both, actually.

My child used to go to Let's Act and, because it was too focused on the LAMDA exams, they got pretty bored during class and decided to quit. They also had a few different teachers during the school year, which probably didn't help. You get lots of videos and photos from them on a class WhatsApp group, but it means you get to see that your child does nothing for half of the time. I know another family from a different class that had a similar experience.

I found Perform by chance and decided to give it a try. My child now asks me every day after school if there's Perform in the afternoon! The teacher is lovely and the class is focused on developing the whole group, split into acting, dancing and singing. Every term there's a different theme that really gets the children engaged. We don't get any videos, just an email saying what happened in class that day and, to be honest, I prefer it this way. There's a show at the end of each term instead of only one at the end of the year. They're VERY organised and more professional overall so I'm pretty sure we'll stay with them for a long time.

We've been going to Perform for almost 3 years now (started when our son was 4). He really loves it -- he gets very excited about the sticker every week, their weekly focus, and saving them all up for a stuffed animal at the end.

OMG! I had the opposite experience to let’s act. Miss Amy had some time off whilst she had her baby but she runs such a caring, inclusive club. She has treated my children as if they were her own. My son has ADHD and she showed such patience and understanding. My daughter has gone since she was 10 and she helped her get a drama scholarship to Emanuel. In fact my daughter is now 15 and studying for her silver lamda… so she has done everything from all inclusive performances to lamda qualifications.

Another vote for let's act - both my kids love it, it is by far their favourite activity of the week! They have built so much confidence in performing and speaking and the teachers are amazing. Lamda is great for confidence if they want to do it (there is no pressure!) and their shows in a real theatre environment are amazing.
