Let’s talk about reading. You know it's super important for your child's growth and learning, but sometimes it can be stressful for parents.
❝ But my child loves English Classics and has read the Railway Children at least four times.❞ said no one!
● If your child isn't reading enough, you worry.
● If they read a lot but it's not ‘smart’ stuff, you stress about that too.
● And if they keep reading the same easy books over and over, it might not feel like a big win.
Reading is personal. Now imagine what it’s like for your child having such a focus on their reading? Welcome to the world of 11 Plus reading!
Imagine having someone shining a light on everything that you read?
It could be annoying, right? Maybe a bit of a turn off, especially if I not only told you what to read but when to read it too.
This is why I go on about allowing children to lead the way in their reading. When we support them, they can figure out when they like reading the most.
Back to types of books.
Is your child hooked on those fast-paced, exciting books? They’re getting a dopamine boost from them, similar to munching on McDonald's fries.
And that's okay, but imagine only eating fries all the time…
Don’t despair because there are lots of lovely ways that you can entice your child to embrace new and exciting books!
5 Top Tops
First off, don't ban those fun books entirely. They have their place, just like enjoying your fave chocolate bar on a Saturday night.
If you're not sure what books to choose, ask your child's teacher for a recommendation. If they’re too scary... ask a friendly bookshop owner for some options based on what your child likes.
Let your child choose from a few recommendations. Give them at least two book blurbs to pick from.
If they're not into a book, it's okay. Let them know it's fine not to like every book they try. Encourage them to share their feelings about what they're reading.
Try listening to audiobooks together during car rides or at teatime. Make it a part of your routine. This is a low key way of introducing a different kind of story, without requiring much effort from your child.
