The gates of the Oasis green space on Thessaly Road have been opened by the council for a community open day after years of the site being locked up and falling into dereliction.
Playspace: Families enjoy the green space at Oasis Day
On Saturday 8 June, people from the local area including Carey Gardens and Patmore Co-ops and the Savona estate were welcomed with free ice-creams and refreshments, live music and mural painting as they gave their views on how the large green area should change for future use.
Older residents recalled memories of playing on the grass and of the skate park which was once there, while Eloise Barnes, daughter of the late local artist Brian Barnes, took part in tree planting with children and other members of the community.
The project is part of the council’s drive to renew local neighbourhoods by listening to residents and using funds collected from developers to make improvements.

'Precious green space'
Simon Hogg, Leader of Wandsworth Council, was joined by Cabinet Member for Housing, Aydin Dikerdem to see the newly-opened site.
Councillor Hogg said: “I’m so pleased we’re able to return the Oasis site back to the community where it belongs and thanks to all the people who came along to share their memories and suggestions for what should happen next.
“None of us want to leave this precious green space in limbo forever so we’ll move as fast as we can to get it opened up permanently and safely for everyone to enjoy.”
Help shape its future
The site has fallen into disrepair and attracted fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour over the years, so the council is engaging with the local community to shape its future.
