Does Your Year 5 Child Love Easy, Fast-paced, Funny Books?

Postby Creative Hare » Mon Sep 16, 2024 9:41 am

Many children love consuming humourous books for breakfast!

They are getting a dopamine boost from them, similar to munching on McDonald's fries. And that's okay as we all need a boost from time to time, but imagine only eating fries all the time…

Don’t despair because I have some top tips to help you encourage your child to try new and more challenging reads that will begin to expose them to new and exciting vocab!

Firstly, do not ban all the easy, fun books. They have their place, similar to savouring your favourite chocolate bar!

Bridge the gap between the easy page-turners and children’s modern classics with books that mix humour with slightly more advanced plotlines and vocab. Past students who have managed to bridge the gap enjoyed reading, ‘The Wild Robot’ by Peter Brown, Holes by Louis Sachar and Matilda by Ronald Dahl.

➤ Listen to audiobooks together during weekend car trips or at teatime. The key is to make the activity part of your family routine. It’s also a low-key way of introducing a different type of story without requiring much effort from your child; yet they will benefit from hearing how words are pronounced.
