my husband bought me a Nikon D80 and I spent a long time taking photos on the auto setting, and so a few months ago I took a course at Zoom-In (by Oval tube). It taught the basics of using a SLR camera and I found it brilliant. They do lots of different courses and so it may be worth looking on their website.

I'm sensing a theme here but my husband also bought me a digital SLR for my birthday which I used on automatic for several years. I then signed up for an adult education evening class at Francis Xavier College, I think it was part of Lambeth continuing education courses. I was so lucky to end up on a course taught by Karl Grupe, who also teaches at Central St Martins although this course was a fraction of the cost of one there. He was brilliant and I now use my camera the whole time. I'm not sure if he's still teaching there, but I know that he has set up his own place called The Mango Lab (you can google it) and they do one day courses as well as loads of other types. He is a great photographer and teacher. I'd been put off adult education after a particularly dire experience years ago with a boring, ill prepared teacher but I can't recommend Karl enough.

Robbies on Ritherdon Road are a local photography shop who offer photography lessons - I think general but also bespoke. They are helpful, friendly and local and go the extra mile.
I gave a lesson to my sister in law who was a good photographer but had a smart new SLR camera with lots of new features on the camera and it went v well.

My husband's done several of Karl's courses at SFX and learned a huge amount.
