Moving lines at beginning of topics?????

Random I know..... Sometimes at the beginning of a subject there will be a circle with moving lines in it.... What does this mean
eg Go to whats on.. look at a subject... it will say NEW and sometimes there is a circle with moving lines and sometimes it even has a star....
I know your thinking I have far too much time to think but is bugging me.... :?:

I assume it means popular subjects (i.e. where lots of people have viewed). I think a star means really popular!
